Solved PSU Recommendations

Hello all,

I've decided to build my own PC over the summer but I've ground to a halt with these two. I've found processor, mobo, RAM etc. and I'm down to the last few thing: the PSU. I've read a few issues of PC Format magazine but it didn't really enlighten me about it.

Does anyone have any recommendations on what PSU to get? I'm looking for a 750W PSU in the region of about £70 ($115 for my friends over the pond). I would prefer to have a modular one, but it's not essential.

PSU requirements depend on the components.

List them up, and i can answer you better, but unless you are running dual gpu's, 750W isn't needed. Even a nvidia 580/680 gpu can be done easily on 600->650W

Oh.. if you get a non modular psu, itll be abit cheaper. Just remember though, always go quality as if your psu fails, it can blow EVERYTHING else.

Basically i'm saying don't cheap out on a psu... plus they outlast all other components.

Looks right nice build.

You really don't need a 750W. The 650W corsair is plenty of power, and can save you some cash.

As for RAM, go 2x4Gig for 8Gig.

Less ram sticks is easiest on the mobo, but being dual channel, you get best preformance with multiples of 2.

Have you tried pricing this at scan or overclockers.co.uk ?

I wanted to sort out what to get first, then try to find the cheapest one I've had a little look at OcUK for a few of the parts but Ebuyer was cheaper for most of them.

I've had a little problem with the board. I originally found it because it had everything I needed, was a Z77 chipset and included a water cooling kit (whilst stocks lasted). But sure enough, they ran out and now I can't get it. Do you have any recommendations on what mobo to get? I'm after a LGA1155 socket with a Z77 chipset (around £150 ish) Also, what's a good water cooler to get (around £60)?

I'm not big on ram, but you do need to becareful of the heatsinks. If theyre to tall, it can i nterfer with cpu heatsink.
The model you choose look good, but I'd only go 8Gig. i have 9 in my dual xeon rig, and with 6Gig gong to a vm setup, I still have plenty left.

On the mobo. Ts a greart mobo, but unless you are craZY overclocking, you dont need that level of board, overkill. You will not notice the difference if you got somethin like the ud3 or something like an Asus P877-V and save £40

Saddly, the all-in-one colers at £60 are crap. Take the savings from the mobo and get the H100. The case you choose can hold it, and its the oly one gonna give a better than air cooler performance.

Btw, this setup will easily compete with my dual xeons. Theses cpus are pretty kick-ass, especially if overclocked.

I want to hit around 5GHz, but I don't know if that's considered crazy overclocking. I wouldn't overclock the RAM or GPU though. So will a UD3H be a good board to get then? Or is it worth going for something like the P8Z77-V PRO or the Z77A-GD65?

That looks much better, I'll get one of those. The Kuhler 620 looked very lightweight and I wasn't sure how well it would do to be honest.

Okay, I thin k you might be disappointed now. The 3xxx cpus are a mixed bag overclocking from the reviews with sub 5Ghz results.. You may want to retink Ivy and stick with a 26/700k.

In anycase, i think any of the mentioned mobo will be fine. the Asus has, in m opinion, the best usable feature/ dollar.

Now on PI, its single threaded, so at 2.26Ghz, you'd for sure win.

I've seen that they run quite hot compared to the sandys, but I'm hoping it won't be a problem with water cooling. I could always go LN2 cooled if it runs too hot

I've just had a look at the Asus P8Z77-V PRO and it looks perfect. I'm going to go with the pro version because I need wireless and the normal doesn't have it.
