I originally had 512 mgs if ram and added 1 gig more but my computer won't recognize the new ram.

The ram has to match and be the same. You cannot have 512mgs and 1 GB

Many in the know say, "Dont mix and match". Discard what you had and buy all that you need. Usually if you dont mix and match, the computer works just as fast as the slowest ram will allow.
