Looks like checkmate.
If someone would answer this question just for my knowledge, I'd appreciate it. I personally think the issue resides with the onboard adapter and I think it is a hardware issue. That said, what is the physical relationship between the onboard video adapter and the PCIe slot, regardless of what card is in it? When the adapter is changed to PCIe in BIOS, then the onboard adapter should be disabled. But isn't that merely a software disabling? From this ignorant chair it just seems that somehow the onboard adapter is physically causing the freezes.
wither 3, richc46 and townsbg........I can't thank you enough for your trying to resolve this issue. I just happen to think that things do break in computers with the high temps in such a small area (HP Slimline) and have a tendency to go probably faster than in a bigger tower. Lesson learned for me. Unless someone has an epiphany that no-one has thought of before, let's call it quits. I've got everything I need on separate drives and as soon as the money becomes available I'll just get a new computer. Seems like the most logical answer at this point. Again, thank you for your time and expertise in trying to get this resolved.
