Hello

I am wondering if there is a way to record my old cassettes tapes to my computer and then burn them to a disk's. What would I have to do to convert them this way, I have 1001 cassette tapes that are going to waste away if I don't come up with something. Thanks for all of your help. I invite all to jump in on this one.

Hi Tom,

See if the following helps. You may need some free software and some connecting cables (if you don't already have any), but it isn't that difficult (but it will take quite some time with that many). And make sure you protect the CDs. They may ultimately last longer than cassette tapes (though you may be a bit disappointed at the quality of the cassettes after all this time - it won't match the quality of the CDs you bought as CDs) - but they can be smudged or scratched or otherwise damaged, so get jewel cases or a set of storage folders to keep them safe. Don't worry too much about the quality of the CDs as the limiting factor is going to be the cassettes anyway.

Also, if you're going to do this, take time first to clean your cassette deck heads (not roughly and not with a cassette-type cleaner but with a special cleaning kit with fluid and cotton-tipped sticks where you can be gentle and do it right and concentrate on the playing head and not worry about the recording head - and I'd do it ever several dozen since the tapes are bound to be dusty and dirty). And don't forget to also clean the CD player periodically if you're going to give it that kind of use.

If you don't have Word, get www.openoffice.com and you can do it for free (except for the cost of the labels) using Write. Plus it's safer as markers can bleed through the CD and eventually cause problems.
