Registry Cleaners

I read quite often about the possibility of "registry cleaners" messing things up on Vista. Is it recommended not to use a registry cleaner at all? Are there good/bad ones? My computer is almost brand new so I don't believe I have any problems. I used a registry cleaner on my old XP computer.....it found lots of problems.....fixed them and the machine ran better than ever!

Hi Chiefjim,
Speaking from personal experience, I recommend NOT using a Reg Cleaner. However if in the end you decide to anyway, I suggest the following.
1. Be sure the one you choose makes a registry backup of the files it will remove. Note: this backup has nothing to do with the Windows Restore Point.
2. Do not allow it to 'clean' windows system files.

Just a suggestion for you, there is a product (FREE) that is very popular (I use) called CCleaner very user friendly, and hasn't let me down yet, and updates are about every month or so. CCleaner - Update
Best of luck,
Jakeman97

I use CCleaner regularly and I have had no problems yet... I guess the key is not to touch the "Windows System Files" as explained by Jakeman97.

I often used it more to get rid of any instances of an application (or driver) I just uninstalled.

AstaLaVista and Jakeman97 are on the right track here. A well-informed use of something like CCleaner or even manual cleaning can be beneficial to remove bits and pieces, but the second you get into the Windows System Files, you risk the chance of doing some damage.

Cheers,

I use CCleaner and have never had a problem but I do back them up and after awhile I Don't see any problems I get rid of them. Also make sure you know what your deleting.

There is now option for Windows System Files am I missing something?

Hi venom762,
Your not missing anything. That was just a caution to the OP; that no matter what product he chooses to use, "Don't let it clean Windows System Files".
CCleaner does have a 'System Section', and an 'Advanced Section'. You are absolutely correct when you stated, "Also make sure you know what your deleting".
