reinstall vista

I have a Toshiba l-305-s5933 laptop with 3gigs ram;
I have created the recovery discs but they won't boot?
I am told that there is a reinstall partition that allows the system to reboot to its original configuration, does anyone know how to access and activate this partition.
I do not have the original vista discs.
