Solved Restore Ownership to Windows Sidebar

Can you please help me with something? I'm reading your tutorial on returning Ownership. I want to do this for the "Windows Sidebar".

Before I proceed, just wanted to confirm that the Owner of this Directory and all it's subdirectories should be "trusted installer"

NOTE: My system is Vista Home Premium 64-bit

Also, will this return the permissions back to what they were prior to my taking Ownership? I hope the answer is "yes".

I tried the System Restore first, but apparently I changed this too long ago and it does not revert the Ownership back to it's original Ownership

Hello Meltie,

I just check in Vista, and the default owner is "Trusted Installer" it and it's subfolders and files.

Hey Shawn,

Here's what happened.

Followed instructions:

At Step 4 I had to hit "edit" instead of "continue" - no biggee

At Step 8 I checked "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects". I did this because I had taken ownership of everything in that Directory.

Computer gave me an error message. Said something about Gadgets folder (access denied) and then another one with a long paragraph stating something like "won't allow as it would mess up consistency . . . " Wish I'd written that down DOH! Tried to recreate it but didn't get it and was afraid to mess with it further.

Anyway, it allowed me to continue.

At Step 11 it did show Owner as being "trusted installer"

At Step 12 - permissions did marry up to Tutorial (List folder contents and Special permissions were checked)

So, did I do this correctly? Do I need to do anything else or am I done? Are those 2 error messages a problem?

NOTE: The reason why I took Ownership of this in the first place was because I had another issue (which is resolved) where I ran an SFC scan. Scan said there were conflicts with my Sidebar. In order to correct those, I had to take Ownership. That seemed to go fine. When I went to try to change permissions back, that's when funny stuff started to happen and I felt it would be best to return Ownership of this item to it's original state.

If your sidebar is working properly, then I would not worry about it.

In retrospect, I should have left the darn thing alone in the first place, as I don't really use it. Everything I need is already on my tool bar!

Oh well, it was a good learning experience. Painful, but of value
