Dear all,

I would like to setup Windows Vista in virtual machine and run it. Not sure which virtual machine should i use. I am thinking in between these 2 options, first Windows 10 Hyper-V VM and VMware Player 12.

Any suggestion?

Thanks

I prefer VMWare and I haven't tried hyper-v. Where are you going to get a license key? You can't use one from a sticker on a computer. It'll have to be retail. Also if you read through the forum there are various issues running Vista. Lack of browser and AVS support. No more updates through Windows update although you should still be able to download sp2.

Thanks for your VM suggestion.

No issue at all as i still have a copy of Windows Vista Home Premium retail i bought in 2009, license key not a problem.

I'm aware of end of life support for Vista but this VM is just for some researching and running some old app that not capable of running on Windows 10.

Have you tried running the app in Vista compatibility mode in Win 10?

I have sucessfully run Vista (briefly) in Hyper-V as one step along the way to upgrade an XP machine through Vista, then W7 and finally to Win10. It had installed and licenced software I wanted to continue using, for which I had no install disks or key

You will not be able to use the sound hardware of the host machine using Hyper-V. So if sound is important for the old app you are testing, then choose VMWare.

I run a vista VM on Vmware. It works quite well on the right hardware. I would not do it on less than 4 gb of ram (for your computer) because you will want to dedicate at least 2 for Vista.
