Solved save as help needed

Hi

I save a lot of zip files to my documents ( ww1 research )
When I used to click on one of these links

On XP I used to get a ' save as ' box, and it was simple.

Now I get this

When I double click on this I get

Any thoughts on what I am doing wrong? Where is the good old XP save as function, on Vista? It shouldn't be this difficult. It's incredibly frustrating, to have £500 worth of computer, and have to resort to my old xp Fujitsu ( on it's last legs ) to download my files.
Can anyone help a frustrated Mikky?

Hello Mikky, and welcome to Vista Forums.

It's hard to tell with those small and blurry screenshots. Have you tried right clicking on the item you want to save?

Could you explain more on this please?

Hi Brink. I'll try explain. I am a bit of a techcophobe. It just seemed easy in xp, just click on the file I wanted to download, and ' save as ' a document. Now on Vista am just unable to ' save as ' These files I am trying to download are ww1 diaries, that i have paid to have uploaded. I can download them no problem in xp, and save them to my documents to look at later. On Vista, I just can't seem to do this.
Can you run through the process of edit downloading a file.

Ok. Here's a ZIP file below. You should be able to click on it to get the usual Open - Save - Cancel option. If not, then you might check to see if your security program is causing an issue with it.

That would be a link to another webpage instead of a downloadable file. Try left clicking on it to see if it may take you to the download page or to the file.

Thanks Brink. When I left click, I get what I posted in post 1.
I click on the link ( ie the 1st pic ) and get the 2nd pic. When double click on that get the third pic.
Any thoughts on why I just can't get the box, as in the test zip you posted. That is ideally what i would like to get.

Ah, yep that could be it. Firefox has been a bit buggy in their last few versions. Try it in Internet Explorer to see how it works instead.

I hate internet explorer. I tried to download these files using it. As usual, internet explorer takes over my computer, and I cannot switch it off, without using ctrl alt delete.
My preferred browser is Firefox. Any thoughts on why I
( for a short while ) could get the ' box ' I was looking for, from your test zip file, but can't now?
My old Fujitsu laptop, is running the same version of Firefox, as my new Vaio, I can download these files using the save as option ( same as test zip ) on the old laptop, but not on the new one. I still get the same problem, I posted in post 1

It's just a buggy version of Firefox. You can see if you have any installed add-ons (plug-ins) that may be causing it as well by disabling them.

If Internet Explorer is freezing up on you or not closing, then resetting it may help.

You have to remember you are dealing with a techie idiot remember. I think my internet explorer problem, is due to Comodo/hopsurf that seemed like a good idea at the time. i think it is still on my computer, though tried to uninstall it. As I don't use ie, but use Firefox instead, it shouldn't be a problem, should it?
Does Vista have an inbuilt problem regarding file downloads? I think I need to get an expert to look at this one. I still can't get the save as box, that I could get, in the zip file test you sent me

Thanks for all your help, I will get there eventually. If you were here, I'm sure you would sort it in jig time.

Not unless the Comodo/hopsurf installed a add-on to Firefox as well. However, many people have been reporting problems with the latest beta Firefox. If you have a older version of Firefox, then you might uninstall your current one and install the older one instead until the next version is released.

Thanks Brink, will have to wait till new Firefox. Still not convinced it's a Firefox problem. It's a bit strange, when i try to open a file, it automatically opens in microsoft pic manager.

Did you ever reset IE to see how if that helped any with it?

Not yet Brink, but I have printed out your pages on a few things, and will go through them. I'll be honest, I don't know much about the technical side of things, but I know a man who does. Seeing as you cannot be with me, I will be in touch with him, and get him to go through it with me. It's more than likely something really simple. I don't go near ie now, I don't trust the comodo thing at all, it seem very difficult to uninstall.

Hi Brink. I seem to have sorted my file download problems. Had a general faff, and downloaded PeaZip. Am now as happy as the pig in the proverbial.
