Search does not display results

To clear things up, Windows Vista Search is giving me results, just not in the form in which I'd expect.

When I search for a particular term, I get, for arguments sake, 1066 results, all of various file types. Around 695 of those results are JPG pictures. If I click on the button to Show Only Pictures, then the details pane shows that there are now only 695 results, but the results don't show.

In order for me to see the pictures, I ned to click on All, and then scroll the results until I find the pictures I want.

This only happens with when I try to filter a search to show only pictures.

Hi Peter,

It may be related to the Search Index. Try running the search with Picture after you set the search options to Not use the index to test it. See the settings as this link.

Thank you, Brink, that worked but the search took next to forever, and returned less results than I expected.

That kind of defeats the purpose of having an index, doesn't it? Things is, I've already gotten into the habit of tagging my files with appropriate meta data to help make searches easier. If I tell Windows not to use the index, then the meta data is not searched.

The files I've attached shows what is happening when I use the index. All clearly gives me pictures results, as does the option to show on Pictures, except that they don't show up...

Ok,

Do you have the files stored in a hidden folder by chance? Try having Show all files and folders and uncheck Hide protected operating system files in Folder Options before you do the search the way you normaly do it. See if the results for Picture show up now.

There file are not stored in a hidden folder, and are themselves not hidden. The system has been set to show hidden and protected os files.

As you can see from the images I attached in a previous post, I do get results, but only if the All option is selected. When I filter to show only Pictures, it gives results, but doesn't display them.

I'm not sure why you are not seeing the actual results when you use Picture instead of All. I'm stumped too.

Thats why I came here. I was hoping that someone here could help when there seems to be a problem with Microsoft Support site.

When I try to initiate an e-mail support request, or online chat request, their systems reject my product ID number, despite being a legit Windows Vista. I think maybe it has something to fo with the fact that I'm using a OEM Vista that I purchased from my suppliers.

It won't be the first time I've had problems with activation and registration, but it has left me with no options as to how to resolve this issue.

A OEM Vista would explain it. You will have to go through the OEM for support on that.

Touchy subject. I never did like the policies of OEM support for this reason: Microsoft created the product, so how the hell are the guys that sell supposed to do anything about it?

A lot of people will probably hate me for this, but I was born and live in South Africa, and I know what the "IT Industry" is like here. Trust me when I say that the OEM suppliers haven't a clue. They don't even follow correct protocols.

Like how am I able to purchase an OEM Vista without any accompanying hardware.

I bought my Vista x64 Ultimate from the leading supplier in this country, and they actually warned me against it, because they claimed that x64 is nothing more than a marketing tool used to rope in extra profits.

Not that there was a price difference between x86 and x64, but there you have it....
