What bad, bad,habit?
Vista Guru
Install and setup; Maxtor One Touch 4, 500GB External Hard Drive, and install; Acronis True Image Home Program

NOTE: See system specs below for my current setup.

I need advice and recommendations, and any pitfalls to avoid, to ensure that I end up with a trouble-free install and operating system.

  1. I want to install and add both of the above to my current setup, but am uncertain about the best way to go about achieving a successful result.
  2. I intend to add the HD to take some pressure off my ACER C: Drive [12GB free of 52.1GB], by moving some programs that I have on it, to the Ext HD.
  3. Once the Ext HD is installed, is it possible to just do a 'drag and drop' of programs, from the C: Drive, across to the new ?: Drive? Am I able to designate or give the new Ext HD a name? eg. H: Drive.
  4. I'm also presuming that the new Ext HD will need to be 'hardlined' and powered on, only while I want to use the programs etc on it, and when doing updates via IE7. Does that sound right?
  5. I want to install the Acronis True Image program to the Ext HD, as 'insurance' to clone the content of my Notebook, its systems, functions, settings etc. Does this seem right?
  6. Some of the programs that I intend to move to the Ext HD include these and similar others; Family Tree Maker, Photo Shop, Irfan View, Real Player, Open Office etc. Do these appear to 'qualify' for movement to the Ext HD?
  7. Are there any issues that I should be aware of, that could affect operations with the Brother MFC-465CN printer/scanner etc.
Any advice and recommendations, or potential problems?

Re: Setup Maxtor One Touch 4, 500GB External Hard Drive and Acronis True Image 11 Hom

Yes you can give the HD a new name. Vista will assign a drive letter, but you can change that later if you wish.

No, you will not be able to 'drag and drop' most installed programs to the new drive. You may have to re-install them. The registry entries will be pointing to their old location and the apps won't start.

By hardlined, I assume you mean plugged in and switched on? Yes, it needs to be 'hardlined' to access the drive.

Using Acronis is a good idea.

Another thing you may want to do before using the external drive is format it as NTFS, to avoid any installation problems if the drive is formatted in Fat32 etc.

Your printer should be fine.

Thanks Mate,

All went well and your reply helped with a few of the uncertainties that I had. New HD [default NTFS] installed without hitch and re-named Drive M: [thanks Brink]. Acronis loaded to C: Drive, and lock, stock and barrel copy of C: Drive now on M::D

So now on to the rest.

Thanks again. sassofalco
