Sound Output

Hi im new here and just wanted ask about a problem i've been having since i got my new laptop. I got an ASUS M50SV with integrated Realtek HD ALC888S audio and the problem is in the speaker configuration, it only shows stereo. i cannot change it because its grayed out. The laptop also has S/PDIF output but the Realtek HD Audio Manager doesnt recognize it.

Get where? If you're talking about the screenshot, its the "Realtek HD Audio Manager". After you intall the sound card driver, it's in the bottom tray icons.

i tried an older Realtek HD Driver and no it gives me the option of "Stereo" or "Quadraphonic" under "Speaker Configuration". Still no 5.1
The sound card is capable of 7.1

Hi, Bauss, and welcome to the forums.

Try connecting something to the S/PDIF port *first* and then configuring the settings.

I connected my Logitech Z680 5.1 System through S/PDIF but neither the laptop or the speakers recognize a connection.. i tried connecting it with the 3 cables (green,black,yellow) but the laptop sees one of the cables as a microphone input..

click on the i icon to find out what it is seeing as your sound card, and verify that you have the same thing in Device Manager - also, you might want to make sure nothing is not installed correctly in Device Manager.

Finally, is this using the latest driver from the RealTek website, or the original driver that came with the system? Did you upgrade to SP1? If so reinstall the driver - and if the RealTek driver from the RealTek website is not working get one from the Laptop manufacturer.

control panel and device manager are reporting the same device name so no problem there. I have SP1 installed and i tried both latest drivers from Realtek and Asus drivers but still no luck. However, with the Asus drivers i get an option of Stereo or Quadraphonic, still no 5.1.

The laptop is an Asus m50sv and the sound chip is an ALC888S which is capable of outputing 7.1 channels
