SP1 on stage 3 100% then reverts???

Why don't you just use my suggestion.
At least give it a try.

I was thiking if you want to try a clean install there is a thing called slipstreaming
where you merge the service pack with the copy of the OS and burn it to a dvd.
I do not know how to do that. But maybe somebody here could point you in the right
direction.

I think I would go a step further than Dwarf's recommendations, and just go ahead and create a slipstream dvd.

Vista Lite does a pretty good job of it. Just be real careful with any subsystems that you remove as part of the process!! (By default, all subsystems and drivers are left with their defaults.)

vLite - Windows Vista configuration tool

As an addendum, I'm typing this on a system running a slipstreamed copy of Vista RTM + SP1.

Everything worked great, except for when I tried to have the cd-key automatically entered. Perhaps I typed it wrong. Either way, I simply went in to the System Properties and put my serial in. Everything was A-OK.

Hi Dwarf, I have done a bit of research on the drivers for that card and I struck out insomuch that I did find a set with more signed than the originals but still one thats not. But please give it a go if you have the time. I hate the thought of more $ out of pocket, I just ordered a new back up solution and am updating my network to gigbite/draft-n. soooooo
AVerMedia Technnopogies, INC.
M780 PCIe NTSC/ATSC Combo TV tuner
Driver date: 4-14-2008
Driver Version: 2.5.0.27
Servic: ID AVMNgTunM780
The driver not signed is: C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\AVerTun.sys

The thought I had with the slipstream as Itwally suggests is that my dvd drives are working with unsigned drivers also. Would I not have issue then when using one of them for the slipstream?
DVD drives are as fallows
Lite-on dvd-16p1s ata & Lite-on dvdrw lh-20a1h ata
the two unsigned drivers are same for each drive as they use the same set of four.
C:\windows\system32\drivers\Afc.sys
C:\windows\system32\drivers\PxHelp20.sys
File version: 1,0,0,2

I thank all of you for sharing my frustration. At this point I'm a dog with a bone, and I really want to win.

Hi dedet,

I stand by my previous suggestion of removing the card and then doing a CLEAN installation of Vista and SP1. There is no reason why you should have these drivers for your optical drives - they should operate satisfactorily with the standard Microsoft drivers. My gut feeling is that these drivers have either been installed with the drivers for your card or with some other disk-authoring software that you have installed.
If you have managed to install Vista and SP1 by following my suggestion, you can try reinstalling the card. A link to the most recent driver (2008/08/05) is provided below. Check to see whether you need to install the drivers before or after the physical installation of your card (see the instruction manual) and manually create a resore point prior to doing so. That way, you should be able to restore your system to its previous condition if the driver and/or card causes problems.

Hi Dwarf,

I'll pop the hood and have my way with that tuner card. It will give me good reason to poke around and do some fall cleaning as well. You found a different page than I with newer drivers, thanks for the time spent.
If the offending drivers are still there in the optical drive folder I'm assuming that a delete of the drivers and a re boot will get rid of the unsigned ones that you think are piggy backed in?

Well, I finally got to the SP#1 issue and again it kicked my butt. All I have is a recovery disk from my rigs manufacturer and so a clean install is out of the picture for me, I assume. I physically took the TV card out and also ran in the cmd syst. file checker. It found some files that it could not fix but some of course it could. I killed the WAN and dumped ESET. I also copied my DVD of SP1 to my back up disk in the rig and ran it from there. I uninstalled the dvd rom and dvd burner drives (because for the afore mentioned issues and there drivers). Just as before "reverts changes". So here's the deal, I'm prepared to go purchases the Ultimate upgrade with service pack 1 on it and do a clean install with it as outlined by Brink on 06/06/07 In his tutorial Clean install from upgrade vista. Does any one have further ideas or heads up. Is this a good idea even. I've been wanting to upgrade anyway soooo. Whats the opinion out there? Thanks for any light you can shine on my dim problem.

Hi Dedet,

Microsoft will send you a dvd of the same Vista edition you have installed for $10 shipping pretty sure it includes SP1, if not then you can slipstream it (see tutorial).

Get your product key from your existing machine and go to this link to order - might as well get the 64bit version if your pc supports it:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/1033/ordermedia/default.mspx

To find your product key :

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/85023-product-key-number.html

Hope that helps

Sorry, they used to do that , but now it's only if you bought the retail version - if you have OEM , seems they expect you to try and get it from your computer manufacturer.:(

Do you know anyone who has a disc with SP1 already on it ? People have posted they have done that , using their own product key ( needs to be the same version you have, i.e. 32 bit, but the dvd's have all editions, basic, premium, ultimate - your product key determines the edition that is installed )

Hi SIW2,
Thanks for the thought. I hadn't heard of the disk buy deal. I'm sorry I missed out on that. It would have been a inexpensive way to go. I think I'm just going to stand up for the clean upgrade to ultimate. There are a couple of features it has that I'd like. No friends with a disk that would work. My fear is that I spend the $ for the upgrade and then I have some kind of difficulty with it and I've waisted time and $ again. Thank you for the response.

Hi,
To all that have payed attention to this ongoing rant and sp1 issue. All though I never did succeed in my quest for completion of my "reverting" problem, I have won in the sense that I now have sp 1 on my home rig and have gained so more computer savvy through the incite of those of you that responded with educated advice. This forum is a good one. If you dig its there to help and/educate.
I didn't win the war, but the point of the battle was to get sp1 and that I did, so the battle is mine. I implemented Brinks tutorial on a clean install and upgrade. I sprung for ultimate with sp1 already on disk. I followed Brinks instructions and it was a breeze. Its a nice piece of work, http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/68767-clean-install-upgrade-vista.html very easy to follow and worked as advertised. I saved all my documents and personal media, and am up and running. I have a few programs yet to load up but life is good in the home office. I will pass on what I can in this forum, it seems a good community.

I had a similar situation. I believe that it happened because I had insufficient disk space. I only had four gigabytes available, but since I had Windows Ultimate with all language packs and Windows Ultimate Extras installed, I need more like fifteen gigabytes available. Your problem seems very much like the one I had. I cloned my old hard disk drive onto a new one that left me with around eight gigabytes available and Vista SP1 installed without a hitch, save and except roughly eight hours of installation time.

Hi Neal Bangia

I have two WD sata 320gb hard drives in the rig set up as a c and d drive. d is media and back up with c running with no partitions and 210 gb's of available space? I am put off that the issue bested me.

Then I suggest that you do a manual install of Vista SP1, but before doing so, install the preparatory tool, perform SFC /scannow and chkdsk c: /f. That is what it going for me.
