Hello I am running windows vista home premium 64 bit sp2, HP-Pavillion a6530f, 4.oo gigs, AMD Phenom(tm) triple core processor, 640 Hardrive, Nvidia geforce 6150SE nforce430, for the last month everytime the system is turned on the screen will have a strip across the top which will be black then under that a stripe that is blue and will do this on the intire screen which is LG w40 series 1600 by 900 widescreen resolution, so black and blue and it blinks in and out real fast and then goes to log on, ( I am a newbie at computers but want to make sure that their is nothing wrong with it or if their is then maybe someone could help. I have noticed that the computer is slowing down a lot, I have done Defrag, disk check which still says it failed, sfc /scannow and that says that it was able to fix some things but not others and a elevated command Defrag, the screen flashes real fast and it is doing it longer and longer, my screen is 7 months old.

Lets try to determine the cause
Boot the computer in safe mode. It happens then its a good chance that it is a driver or more likely hardware

Try with clean boot. Does not happen, follow the instructions to try to solve

Go to search type device manager and then look for yellow markers. If none are there make sure that your graphics driver is up to date.
None of the above works good chance it could be the monitor or monitor driver. Make sure the driver is up to date. It is in the device manger, as is the graphics driver.

I have done what you asked and no it does not do it in safe mode, this has taught me a little about the safe mode thank you now what do you recommend for me to do.

Now try in clean boot.
If it does not happen, follow the clean boot instructions to find the cause
We have good news now, however. Its not hardware.

First, I have the choice to sit in front of a computer screen or try to help. I prefer to help, so ask as many questions as you like

Hello I am done now with the things you wantd me to do, on the first part of the clean boot it still did it but not on any of the others, after the first one the window went from blue to black to blue faster then the blink of an eye and all of the others everything went the way it should. I don't know if that tells you anything or not if it does I will be greatful to know what was wrong with the system.

OK Tom,
In the event that you get back after I log out, getting late in CT.
This what you have to do.
The checked boxes in clean boot are part of the start up process.
Based upon what you told me one of them makes the monitor go nuts. Determine which one it is. Once we know which it is ( I bet Anti virus, but thats a guess) we have a choice. Either we leave it off, if you do not really need it on boot or we can fix it together, if possible.
Post when you read this, I will answer if still here or I will get you tomorrow morning.

Hello again this is what I have done.

1, First I printed a copy of the how to do a clean boot.
2, Just above my start tab I typed msconfig.exe
3, I clicked continue and a box appeared and in that box under GENERAL I clicked the Selective Startup and then I made sure to de-select the load startup items and then I clicked ok, from there I clicked the services and clicked the hide all microsoft services and then I clicked the Disable all button and then clicked the OK button and then restart. When the computer restarted is when it went from blue to black and the blue again really fast.

Next Step # 2

is when I went in and deselcted half of the programs and half still running, the 4 that was checked was Kaspersky 2011 internet security,, Google up-date services,,, Google software up-dater and Nivida display driver service.

Next Step # 3

I did the same steps and this time I clicked the other half and deselected the other 4, from then on the computer started up just fine, so I think on the first things I did when Kaspersky and the other 3 is when it did it and when I switched to the other 4 and deselected the others it ran fine

Now when you had the items checked and it did not run, one of those items is the problem. Figure out which one, by unchecking one by one. Understand?

Just figure it out. One of the items is the problem, when it is in the startup. I think that you know how to do it out from here.

If you think it is the AV and I guessed that way back (read my posts). Make a system restore point and uninstall the AV. Download and install Microsoft Security Essentialsk, you should work fine then. If there is a problem, go back with System Restore. Security Essentials is great and its free.

While you are at it download and use Malwarebytes, get the free version and run a scan once a week.

You will have great protection, for free, without the problems.
Use the Windows Firewall, too.
We have this solved now. Dont make any other changes until we speak or at least type, LOL)

Hello and it seems to be Kaspersky Internet Security 2011, I have never had a problem with them it has been great security, I had Norton when I first got the computer need I say more on that. How did you know it was the security that was causing the problem without getting all the info first. You must have went to a very good school. Now do you still recommand the other security that you spoke of if so I guess I will try it. Do you think Kaspersky will cause me more problems or would this be about it. Thank You so very much for not only teaching me how to find the problem but taking the time to help a stranger, you have been wounderful.

After a while, problems repeat themselves.
Uninstall using the uninstall tool
Then download MSE and malwarebytes
Ill get all the links

Bottom line, ditch your AV get MSE. Made just for windows. The other is one size fits all.
