Startup repair

hey everyone,
So this problem appeared randomly yesterday. I have a dell inspiron 531 that has been running fine for about 2 years now, but yesterday (after my mother decided to install second life for some reason) the pc shut down, then alerted me that it couldnt start up properly and had to automatically run a startup repair. After doing that for a bit, I was presented with two options :shut down or restore to an earlier point. I hit "restore" and the computer started doing its own thing. Finally, i got a message stating that the pc could not be repaired automatically and that if i had installed any devices recently, that i should remove them. I then looked at the diagnotstic and repair details, which stated that the root cause was Bugcheck 116 (whatever that means) and that the computer had attempted to check and repair the integrity of the system files but this had failed. Then I got a series of options regarding how i could fix the computer that looked like this:

I ignored these and restarted the computer, and it restarted fine. This morning i got the same problem again. And now its on a startup repair loop and not actually fixing the problem. What do????? Could this have anything to do with the exorbitant amounts of updates i have yet to perform?

Hi welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear you are having problems
It is your error Bugcheck 116, that worries me, as it is generally associated with BSoD's >> Black Screen of Death.

Owing to the nature of your post I will request that one of our specialists have a look at your problem.
They are busy, and due to different time zones they are not always readily available.
However, I would ask you to be patient & one will attend as soon as practical. Thank you.
Meanwhile would you download this link, the expert may require you to upload reports for analysis.

Those that can help will need the information that is outlined here,
http://www.vistax64.com/crashes-debugging/282419-blue-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html

If you can include that info in your next post, they will be able to read it and offer you some help.

Thank you for your patience.

Wow you guys are quick
For starters, i can tell you it isnt black screen of death. I do get a blue screen upon starting up, though, which is only there for a short time. It usually says something about a phyisical memory dump, but it's there for such a short time that i have no idea what it actually says. And no, i dont have the installation disk; the pc came with windows already installed.

Well I'm stumped. The pc will start up properly now, but once i log on, i get a bunch of messages that I've never gotten before. One of them is a windows system configuration thing that needs the admin's permission to run. And all these messages from norton that my computer needs to update some stuff. I updated and ran the system config. and the pc crashed. Oddly enough, when i don't run either of these things, the pc runs fine. I suppose I dont really have a problem anymore, so thanks for the help guys.

it's good news that your PC starts up again OK!
But I'm just querying the rest of the post?
You seem to be saying that when you updated Norton & ran System config, it crashed.
But if you don't do those things it's OK? Is that correct.?
It's just that the things cannot be OK if items are still making the computer crash.
Could you clarify a little more please.
Thank you.

Kesume, yeah that seems to be what's going on. This is a bit embarassing, but I have 22 updates waiting in the update queue :o. Usually i try to update and then get the BSoD. Right before getting blue screened, i usually get a message stating that a certain device drivier has crashed, although ive yet to get enough time to see which one

Hi,
Is the computer in the same condition as it was 2 days ago, or are there changes?
If changes please tell us what they are?
Are you still getting the blue screen?
It would be good if you could check the drivers in device manager.
Have you noticed anything different program/software?
Sorry questions necessary so that we know a little more.
Thank you.
