I wonder if he has considered the possibility that the antivirus on his Windows 7 (or XP, for which options are even more limited than they are for Vista) might be causing his issue? I’m just speculating because no one here seems to know what the problem is.

I assume you've disabled Secure Boot in the Win 7 BIOS.

The only security software that was integral to Windows 7 was the old Windows Defender antispyware version (inherited from Vista). If no third-party antivirus was installed, then Windows Update may have offered you Microsoft Security Essentials. This is an installed program not integral to the OS, but very similar to the Defender included with Windows 8 and 10. Installing MSE would disable the superfluous antispyware protection. I’m not sure which you are referring to, but I doubt that either one could be causing your issue. If you ever get Vista working, you would not be able to use the “latest” MSE 4.10.209.0 from 2016 because of a time bomb (kill switch) targeting Vista. The best suggestion I have for Vista would be MSE 4.4.304.0 from 2013, which was the last version before the time bomb was introduced. This would require SHA-2 support (KB4474419).

I don’t actually have an antivirus recommendation for Windows XP. (I haven’t used XP since 2008, when I got an exciting new Vista PC that is now an old piece of junk gathering dust in a closet.) I used Avast Free 18.8 on Vista several years ago, but I could no longer recommend it for Vista or XP on account of this: EOL support for Windows XP

I would not be surprised if Avast is somehow causing your issue, although I don’t know how that could be. I must also warn you that Avast is notoriously difficult to completely remove. If you have an image of your XP partition that was created before Avast was installed, that would be ideal.

Me too, never in my Windows 7 life I have ever installed that MSE when Windows 7 already went out of support 5 years earlier. (I still have the problem)

Note that I had this issue before I even installed Avast.

I think I found the reason why, XP in my boot manager was named "Earlier Version of Windows". If Vista was installed, XP and Vista would both have the same desc, so probably that Vista was checking if the bootmgr has an "Earlier Version of Windows", and if it had, it would just KSOD.

Ill close this thread, Chatgpt and I have declared installing vista onto this machine IMPOSSIBLE. Vista will be living in a VM, and will be part of the XP Vista 7 trio in our hearts.
