Switch to Ubuntu?

Someone can also boot the ubuntu live cd as root and access your files, too.

What do you mean? I know root is pretty much admin, but if I was using ubuntu without the cd how could someone boot with the live cd to access my files? Sorry, I'm still trying to grasp how linux works lol

The live cd is based on root user, so you should be able to mount the hard disk and peruse some files. I haven't used Ubuntu in a while, but that should be it. Check out Ubuntu forums if you want more info.

But wouldn't a person need physical access to the machine? I'm not using Ubuntu anymore, the sound drivers installed in Ubuntu caused conflict when I was in Vista so I just uninstalled it.

Yes, that's why you would remove the cd drive, disable the USB ports, and probably lock up the machine. Sound conflicts? Do you have an external sound card or Realtek Audio?

I don't think there is a 9.10... I just looked on the ubuntu page and the only downloads are 9.04 and 8.04...

Either way, Also I just seen I have the 32 bit version on an iso and I was using it on my 64 bit machine. Wow...

9.10 is coming round about next month. Get the AMD64 .iso if your cpu is 64-bit which it most likely is.

Hmm, yeah I might, I'm about to download the x64 version of 9.04, I can't believe I didn't see that option. Another thing weird about Linux is that when you install a program, you dont get a desktop icon, you have to go in and make it show in the drop down menu off apps then drag it off, or run it in terminal. Kind of a hard hit compared to just a point click interface like Apple and Windows.. But its a big trade off, and most of all its free. I know for sure I'll be installed Ubuntu on the desktop I'm planning on building and using it as my file server.

i use pen-drive ubuntu (xubuntu) im guessing its a lighter version of ubuntu. It take a little more work but its worth it, i like it, its good if you dont want to dual boot or worry about messing up you currently installed OS

Hello all,

So I'm curious, how many of you dual boot, or triple boot with Ubuntu? If so, how do you like Ubuntu? Reliable? Fast? Easy to use? I'm thinking about formatting my drive and using Ubuntu instead of Vista but I'm still barely learning Vista's tricks so I'm really torn about that decision. I guess I just need know the facts and user opinion before I really make the switch. I'm actually posting this from the "Live CD" and I'm using the try Ubuntu with no changes to your machine. Plus a lot of the cracking and really neat monitoring programs are linux only so it kind of sucks since I really want to get into that. NO I don't want to hack into other peoples machines to steal stuff, I just would like to learn how it's done so my system isn't open for compromise. So should I make the dive or not?

Thanks guys :)

I run Ubuntu on a separate pc. Extremely reliable. I've worked with Solaris (UNIX), Gentoo, Slackware, OpenSUSE0. Ubuntu is just fine for a reliable workstation.

For the amount of time I used it, it was great. Customizable, fast, somewhat easy once the learning curve of the terminal is over lol. Also, the interface is nice andeasy on the eyes

Ubuntu, like all linux distros, is a different operating system.

Linux has ftp and browser capability.

An X-Window is a shell, not exacly like the dos command thing. Well, you can do more with the linux/Unix version, must more.

An X-Window can be used as a terminal window. Or run programs from.

KDE is a gui interface for use with linux.

You can do anything with linux you can do with Windows. Unix was around before Windows and linux. To some it may be 'old fashioned' but it works and works rather well.

I had a linux computer for several years, but it was packed away until I got my new apartment. I can connect to the internet, use any of several browsers, word processors, etc. designed to run on linux.

Executables (.exe files) are not compatible with Linux. It uses a different shell, therefore executables use different code, as does Mac OS (I believe they use .app's or something). There is a very popular "emulator" called WINE which is not actually an emulator (WINE = Wine Is Not an Emulator). I believe that is what most people use to run Windows-environment (or other environment) tools on a Linux system. Though most tools found in other environments can be found in Linux too. It wouldn't be a distributable OS without the solutions you can get on other OS's.
