System restore

Hi,

I should like to know why a Restore Point of only ten day's ago has gone missing:huh: I have only points available from a couple of day's back.

My shadow storage under vssadmin is set at 69gb. Surely that is enough to keep the points that I need.

However, as I have done a Back Up of files and folders to an external HD to a month back I suppose that is the same thing. Little puzzled.

Welcome
Per our highly respected tutorials, you can increase or decrease space used. The more space used the more points will be saved. The max is 3 months.

Information may be basically the same as the prior post, but this tutorial is certainly worthy of a read.
You may have inadvertently erased the older points. This can be done by turning off SR or by other software. For example, some Anti Virus, disc cleaning software such as Ccleaner may have been the cause.

Possibility :
You might have done a disk cleanup about a few days ago.
While you were doing disk cleanup, you had also clicked " More Options " which would removed all your restore points except the most current one at that time.
Restore points were added to the list since then.
There would explain why you have only a few days worth of restore points.

Read step #12 to the end of this disk cleanup tutorial :

No, I certainly did not do this as I only use the basic Disc Cleanup facility and NEVER use the other aspect of it that you mention.

As a matter of imterest, what cleanup tools do you use?
What AV & malware programmes do you have?
Looking for things that run in the background that you know about & theones you don't.
Are they clearing/cleaning, responsible in some way?
Do you have Norton Security by any chance?

How did you know you had a restore point 10 days ago?

I have Microsoft Security Essentials (AV) / Malwarebytes / cCleaner/ Auslogics Disc Defragment. I rarely use the last two. I got rid of Norton Security when I got my Laptop.. never liked it. I know I had a Restore Point ten days ago because I created it manually and it was on the schedule.
In all honesty I feel this Laptop is behaving poorly in the last month or so. I am continually getting "not responding" alerts and the Performance and Reliability graph always plummets once it gets over the 9.50 mark. It never reaches the 10.

I would use auslogics defrag in the mode that protects restore points

This may or may not shed some light on your problem,

I know you said you rarely use the defrag, but that could be a reason your losing them,

Shadow copies may be lost when you defragment a volume

Programs that manipulate volume blocks during the boot process may cause data loss in Windows Vista or in Windows Server 2003

Sorry to protact this debate. Are you suggesting NEVER to defragment at all ? Or what would be safe intervals to use ?

I'm not suggesting anything about how often or not to defragment,

I was just providing some links that explain that others have experienced

restore points missing after defragging.

I find that I don't have to defrag very often myself, once every 2 or 3 months for me is fine.

Richc46, gave a good suggestion for defragging.

Sorry, did not forget about you but Im not home to check my auslogics. From what I remember, the defrag, in question, is on the main page next to analyze. If not there I will post as soon as possible.
If you do not hear in a few weeks, post to remind me.
