Task Scheduler

Have 2 problems which I feel is associated with TS.(1) My "reliability monitor" is not updating.(2) There is no automated "restore point" being created.I have checked all the normal settings and they all seem to be in place and enabled.I was hoping it would all kind of self correct but that hasn't happened over the past 2 weeks and I have not made any system changes.Any suggestions?

Lets talk about the important one first
restore points.
Be sure there is enough space available for the points
Be sure not to defrag the drive with the points
Check the task scheduler to be sure it is on and has the correct schedule
Be sure system restore is turned on and be sure not to shut off as that will delete all points

Richard thx. for the prompt reply. All items you listed checked in order except for your point about "defrag".The restore points are stored on my "c drive" which I regularly defrag with the Auslogics prog. which I had been doing back when the restore points were being auto created.I will refrain from defrag for a couple of days and report back with the results.I like your order of importance.

Dont defrag the restore points. And check the task scheduler for correct schedule. If you dont know how, post.

I have not run defrag, ccleaner,or any other 3rd party prog. for the past 3 days and still no "restore points" created. My attention turned to the many reports and logs that Vista generates so this may be a bit of a clue for you Richard.Event Viewer\Errors\Task Sch.....event 412 TS failed to launch tasks triggered at computer startup.Add'n error value 2144942402.I am also wondering in "services" if there is any certain ones I should double check to see if they are enabled.

That error 412 is just saying that task scheduler did not start
Lets diagnose
Make a restore point now and post quickly as to if the point was made
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76332-system-restore-point-create.html
If you can make the point. Check it tomorrow to see if it is still there
If it is not there, some software is deleting the points
We will then by the process in clean boot find out which one is causing the problem.
I gave you the clean boot procedure, above

If the point can be made and disappears
Make a new one and put the computer in clean boot. If it does not disappear we know that one the software being used is deleting. If that is the case it is probably the anti virus or tune up software. Clean boot will say which it is

So see if you can make one tonight and then post back with results and questions. We should start tonight as this may take several days.

Dont try other procedures on your own as that will contaminate the results that we are looking for.

Do you understand the instructions?

Lets wait just one more day. If still there tomorrow morning, I think that we have narrowed down the problem to points not being made rather than being deleted.
But before that lets check the task scheduler to make sure that points are scheduled to be made.
Go to task scheduler and then to system restore and check out the schedule, let me know if the SR schedule is on and what the schedule is.
Inside scheduler, expand the tree in left panel. Then go to windows, there you will see system restore.
I know this seems slow, but I think that its best to check one thing at a time, be sure before moving on.
To help you get a general idea about Task Scheduler, you may want to look this over

Just to give you a heads up on the next step, if the above do not indicate problems
You will go to task scheduler and see when the next SR point is scheduled.
If you did not change the default schedule, they should be created in this fashion

System Restore creates restore points on a regular basis even if you have not made any changes to the system. System Restore automatically creates these restore points:
•every 24 hours of calendar time
or
•every 24 hours your computer is turned on

If your computer is turned off for more than 24 hours, System Restore creates a restore point the next time you start the computer. The computer must be idle for a few minutes before System Restore creates a scheduled restore point.

At least an hour before the next scheduled SR point, put the computer in Clean Boot, (see prior posts). Lets see if the point is made.
If it is we can find out why they do not usually appear, by using the Clean Boot procedure. I think that the problem is due to your Anti Virus software, defrag software or schedule or tune up software.

Also, go to search and type services. In services make sure that task scheduler is on automatic and it is started.

Still no restore point created even under the "clean boot".I continue to search all sources for a solution so just to mention couple other things I tried.I disabled "system restore" to clean everything and then enabled it this did not help.I double checked "services" and I found "volume shadow copy" was set at "manual" so I changed that to "automatic".The solution continues to evade us  grrrrrrr

This will get solved
To recap. You made 2 points several days ago, which are still there, but no new points. Is that correct? You made the points over 48 hours ago?
What is the task schedulers schedule for SR
Finally, I found a post of mine from a few months back. It may help.
In addition, I remember now. If SR points are scheduled for once a week and one is made out of sequence, manually etc, another will not be made at the scheduled 7 day interval In other words, one every seven days is maximum.
http://www.sevenforums.com/performa...re-settings-setup-nightly-restore-points.html
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/checkpoints.htm
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/301224
You cannot disable SR or points may be deleted
The computer must be idle for automatic points to be created
A point may not be made out of sequence (manually or because of an installation etc) for the scheduled task (system restore to be made)

If System Restore was disabled since then as was noted in the most recent post, then I believe all restore points would have been automatically deleted. See the warning in: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66971-system-restore.html.

I don't know if this will help, but I discovered the following Tutorial on How to Change the Automatic System Restore Point Settings in Vista Task Scheduler: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/1...-change-automatic-restore-point-schedule.html.

Good luck!

In addition. and it may be mentioned in one of my articles. Disc cleanup will delete points, also
I think that SR is working correctly, but it was some action on your part that has created the situation. I know you are getting axnxious, but this will be solved. It is just necessary to go through the steps to discover the reason.
Delete files using Disk Cleanup
Other software may do the same such as Ccleaner and I am sure others, too.
My article above mentions turning SR off, which may cause the loss of points.

There is only one other scheduled task which is not being completed?

Also
Please click start, type services.msc and press Enter, double click on both system restore service and Task Scheduler service to make sure the startup type is set to Automatic.
I am adding ideas as I think of them.
Please check this post, again, on your return, after reading the first time.

This will confirm the restore points were erased when I diabled system restore, but I immediately created a restore point once I enabled system restore again so I currently have a restore point.Services.....task schedule is set on auto and system restore I'm assuming is actually listed as "windows backup" the description it gives "provides windows backup and restore capabilities it to is set on auto.I checked the list of services twice and did not see a listing "system restore".

Hi krd67,

I was researching this issue (especially the error message and codes you posted) and came upon the following thread: Scheduler - Failure To Launch Problem - 2147942402 | TheDailyReviewer. In short, it suggests making sure the task setup properties are set to use "highest priviledges." It was, so that wasn't the issue (but it may help you and is worth a look). The OP then decided to delete and recreate the task and that resolved the problem. Perhaps this is something to consider (for both the tasks in task scheduler that don't seem to be working).

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

P.S. I do not have System Restore listed as a Service on my computer either - and yet it works fine.
