Task Scheduler

This will confirm the restore points were erased when I diabled system restore, but I immediately created a restore point once I enabled system restore again so I currently have a restore point.Services.....task schedule is set on auto and system restore I'm assuming is actually listed as "windows backup" the description it gives "provides windows backup and restore capabilities it to is set on auto.I checked the list of services twice and did not see a listing "system restore".

ME BAD
Its now windows back up
Sorry.

Sad to say that did not do it.I am ready to take the next step, but being I have never deleted or added a task in TS I want to confirm the proceedure.I take I would "export" the task then use "delete".To add it back just use "import", or is the thinking that some part of the existing task instruction has become corrupt, and must be reentered in new.

Hi krd67,

I believe the task must be entered as a new task. I don't know if the current task is corrupt or not, but it's better to start fresh and be sure that isn't a factor. It shouldn't take very long to create it. It would be best if you deleted the old task, created the new task, rebooted, and then see how things go from there. If you still have problems, verify the services again.

I sincerely believe this will solve the problem, but I've thought that before and been proven wrong - so for now, I'll just hope it works (as you no doubt are also hoping). If not, then we may need to do some additional troubleshooting to try to find the problem as what we've tried should have worked unless there is something else wrong that is unexpected or seemingly unrelated or that we've somehow overlooked - but we'll cross that bridge if we come to it.

Good luck!

I'm encouraged by your confidence I wish I had the same when it comes to reentering the task.It appears straight forward enough untill it comes to the "actions" and detail description.I guess the safest course is to note the present details and type them back in as is.

The following isn't completely comprehensive, but should give you almost everything you need to create the task - especially the part near the end where it discusses the SR settings: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/1...-change-automatic-restore-point-schedule.html.

As far as setting up the new task, a good reference is: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/132903-task-scheduler-create-task.html.

You can pretty much use the current task settings, but double check with the first article in this post to make sure they are close if not identical where information is provided. If the problem is that that task has somehow been changed and that's why it isn't working, then just copying what's already there will end up with the same result - so yes, copy and where possible verify and if you have any questions or something doesn't seem right, just post your concern and we can check our systems to see how they are configured (at least I can as I'm using Vista and mine is working fine).

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

I deleted SR and then added it back in as a new task rebooted, and still no SR point created.I don't as a rule leave my PC running unless it is in use but this last while I will leave it on over night extending past the time it is scheduled to create a SR point just to eliminate a possible source of the problem. The one thing that escapes me is with all the logs and problem reports Vista creates that the cause of my problem is not identified in one of them.Wish I could shed more light.

Have you done this?
1. Click on Start, type Services.msc in Start Search. In the following windows look for Volume Shadow Copy service.
2. Right click on Volume Shadow Copy service (VSS) and Check if it is started.
3. If it is stopped select Start or Restart.
Make sure that the service is started and set as Automatic.

Hi krd67,

This has become a very difficult problem to diagnose and repair. Standard procedures in such a case have not been successful, so we need to try some other alternatives. Doing scans for infections as recommended by Richard above is the best next step at this point, so please do that first and if you find and remove anything significant other than tracking cookies, check to see if that resolved the problem. If anything is found that was not cleaned or could not be cleaned, then post back with that information and proceed no further until we've had a chance to consult our security experts about that infection.

What other tasks are scheduled in Task Scheduler and are they occurring when they should with no problems? You mentioned earlier another task that also wasn't working - please refresh my memory as to what task that is exactly. If those are the only two, and neither is working (or there are more and they too aren't working), then we need to consider the possibility there's a problem with Task Scheduler itself. If there are other tasks that are working, we need to try to figure out why some work and others don't - in effect, what makes the ones that fail different from those that succeed.

First, let's try a simple approach. Let's create a new task to manually defragment the C:\ drive every day at some time when the computer will be on but you aren't likely to be using it (and not at the same time as any other scheduled task). In Task Scheduler, on the left, select Task Scheduler (Local) / Task Scheduler Library / Microsoft / Windows / Defrag and choose the ManualDefrag option (not the scheduled defrag option). Click on the task and then in Actions, click on Properties. Set it up as indicated - use the previously-provided tutorial if you need help setting up the Task properly. Then let's see if the task runs according to schedule. If so, then we can probably rule out Task Scheduler itself as the cause of the problem. If not, then we need to examine Task Scheduler much closer to see why this task also did not run and that suggests Task Scheduler is, for some reason, not functioning or having some type of problem.

In the meantime, go to Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Event Viewer and check for errors involving task scheduler or scheduled tasks in the System or Application sections. Task manager should give you a history of attempted tasks (and whether or not they were successful - look for those that weren't successful) and that should help you find the events based on the time of those scheduled tasks and what the task was. When you find the errors, click on them for more information and then click on the Details Tab and copy the contents and paste them to your next post. This may help identify the cause of the problem. Try to provide several different examples if there are different tasks or if one task shows different detailed information in different errors.

I hope this helps at least identify the source of the problem so we can focus our efforts - otherwise, we may need to do some broad, generalized troubleshooting.

Thanks and good luck!

I have carried out these instructions:
Event Viewer...TS errors continue show at boot up time event 412..failed to launch triggered task...error value 2147942402
AVG scan came up clean
Malwarebytes...scan came up with 3 items which I will try and attach the log.I did not quarantine or remove this as they were listed as "microsoft items" until I get the go ahead from you or Richard.
The other task that is not updating is the "reliability monitor"
I will track the "daily defrag task" I added

Hi Krd67, please go ahead and check the MBam items to be quarantined and deleted. Malware can easily masquerade itself to look legit!

Download DDS from one of these links:
Mirror 1 Mirror 2 Mirror 3
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click the dds icon to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt <--this will be minimized in the task tray
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
Include the contents of both logs in your next reply.

Hi Jacee....sorry for the time lapse but was out of town.I am attaching the files as requested and will update you on current status of my TS. There is no tasks being carried out.I tried to do a manual restore point which up until now I was able to but this morning i got this message "could not create the scheduled task for this reason: the image is corrupt or has been tampered with (0x80041321).I opened the MMC console and under the feature "add/remove snap-ins" I noticed "task scheduler" is listed but not shown as added.I have not made any changes since I last reported to this thread.
