Just wont to say a few words before signing off from Vista Ultimate x64 and back to Xp pro. Most of you here have helped and also solved som of my issues but every time i solve one thing a new one appeares shortly after.Vista looks and feels nice and smooth but i have tryd for a few weeks now to get my rig to run a game like BF2 or flightsim 2004 or any game for that matter properly with no luck.I remember when Xp got servicepack 1 and things was a bit "shaky" for a while on my pc but nothing like this, now i feel moore like a "betatester" or even "alphatester" sometimes. And if my problem is due to vista or Nvidia drivers (790 ultra sli and gtx 260) i dont know but i do know that i have no time or patience for moore of this so i wil down grade from my Q6600 abd 8gb of ram to E6600 and 2gb ram and re install xp pro and hopefully "live happy ever after" so to say.I like a hassel free computing, mabye i will keep vista as a dualboot config after a while but not for now.

Henning signing off

Hello henning.

It's always too bad to see someone 'go away'!
You sure we can't figure out what's wrong?

We'll be here when you come back.

Seems to me his mistake was using Ultimate 64, and trying to play old games.

It seems a shame wasting that spec on XP.

Not sure about the flight sim games, but I've gotten the whole Battlefield series to run smooth as silk on my machine... perhaps I can assist, at least with Battlefield... which is far superior to any flight sim and why would you play that anyway? :p

Hi,Back again. It seems i must eat a camel or two:o.After trying XP and reading up on the latest news on 790 chipsett on my current mobo i know i cant blame Vista x64 for my stability problems.Stiker 2 extrem is a mobo with an "atitude" if can call it that, many of the regular producers of mobo`s have chosen to skip that chipsett completly due to instability al over.Northbrigde bus and S-ata controller is aparrently much to blame for those sudden "freezes" in a game or simply surfing the web.So i take my hat off and beg forgivness while i RMA my mobo and change to this board in stead. And if others here have a tip on another mobo then my only demands is that it has support for DDR3 1600mhz ram and Vista x64 support is a must and i think intel chipset is the better choise but not a must. I wil RMA at the end of this week so if someone have a better mobo to suggest now is the time pls.

Henning.

I was recommended this board,

ASUS P5E64 WS Evolution Workstation Motherboard.

ASUS P5E64 WS Evolution Workstation Motherboard - Page 1 of 5

ASUS P5E64 WS Evolution X48 ATX Motherboard - Page 1 of 14 - Big Bruin

expensive, but should be reliable in that it is a workstation rather than a gamer board.

What particular problem have you been experiencing with FS2004?

for FS2004 issues try out Flightsim's and Avsim's forums

AVSIM Online - Flight Simulation, Flightsim, flight sim, flight simulator, fsx, fs10

FlightSim.Com Forums - Powered by vBulletin

I am big in to flightsims so you will often find me at

Cal Classic Forum - General Discussion

I have flown for hours in FS2004 under Windows XP 64 Professional so there is no inherent problem with using FS2004 under a 64 bit operating system allthough Windows XP 64 professional is of course different from Vista and regular XP too, since Windows XP Professional 64 is actually Windows server 2003 front ended with an XP style user interface to give commonality for people familar with XP and as it is based on heavyweight server product, it should be very reliable. Do not have much experience of Vista 64 yet but though some of the FS2004 free ware and payware add-ons might have problems with Vista, FS2004 itself and most of the add-ons should work.

Best and Warm regards
Adrian Wainer

Hi Adrian
I think i will get that ASUS P5E64 WS Evolution Workstation Motherboard.Have heard good things about it many places.

Nice to meet a fellow flightsimmmer here,i also have several hours and days of learning and fun with that.I havent built up my fs 2004 in vista yet due to my pc problems. But now that i know its harwere related im feeling optimistic again. As soon as i have the new mobo i will start installing fs 2004 ,addons of planes and seenery. But as it is now it wont run properly,pc freezes up randomly and i also have displaydriver crash and somtimets it wont shut down properly.my only consern for the new setup is the displaydriver crash, bcus i am not shure if i can blame that one on my 790i nvidia chipsett, that one might be x64 related.those times i can get as far in game as to the runway i get lots of artifackts like stripes flikkering horizontaly, but looking straight up or down its gone. Those errors are there even with standard seenery nothing extra installed.Mabye i schould switch to flight simX. I have heard its better for multi core cpu`s.What are your specks Adrian?

Regards
Henning

Henning.

I ran in to chipset driver issues, Nvidia GeForce driver issues and a few other issues on an ASUS P5N32-E SLI motherboard using the 680i chipset on Vista and on XP, and then in March 2008 I said, enough of this bulloney, and bought the mobo I have in my sig, which is the Intel D975XBX2 motherboard, and then a month later, I got the Radeon 3870X2 videocard, and never looked back.

I realized when I got my 975 board, that I didn't need DDR3 and that I didn't need a quad core cpu. Lastly a couple of months ago, I upgraded to 8GB's of Mushkin HP2 6400 EPP memory(2X2GB DIMMS) DDR2 800, because memory prices were cheap enough for me to do so.

My Intel 975XBX2 motherboard, has been perfectly stable since March when I got it, without no problems from it at all, and this is why if I do any upgrading in the future I will get strictly an Intel brand motherboard.

I think you'll find that if you dropped this demand things would go more smoothly and be a lot cheaper. Unless you're overclocking then DDR3 1600 is a waste. Running the RAM faster, without also running the FSB faster isn't going to give you any performance increases. If you want to get the best performance out of your sytem, short of overclocking, then run the RAM at 1333 with tighter timings.

Dropping that demand opens up a lot of options in boards for you and lets you at least run the RAM tighter (better performance). You don't want to be known as, "that guy who spent $400.00 on a board to play a $50.00 game". :p

Hi,It is a good response on this issue of mine and lots of good suggestions. To ansver Fumz first,i do see your point when you talk about the prizetag and that i can run my existing 8gb of OCZ pc12800 1600mhz ram at 1333mhz instead, first i did not know that ddr2 and ddr3 has same socket, second since i am RMA my Striker 2 extrem it wont cost me any extra to choose the ASUS P5E64 WS Evolution Workstation Motherboard,i wil get some coins in return in stead.I also want to have my options open to get the QX9770 who is a 1600mhz cpu and i only upgrade my mobo every three years or so.I will study those boards you suggested to me and see, mabye i am "that guy who spent $400.00 on a board to play a $50.00 game".But anyway like WildEagle said i am now going for Intel chipsett as long as i have Intel cpu, just hoping for a smooth ride.

Thanks a bunch
Henning

... i did not know that ddr2 and ddr3 has same socket... I also want to have my options open to get the QX9770 who is a 1600mhz cpu and i only upgrade my mobo every three years or so... mabye i am "that guy who spent $400.00 on a board to play a $50.00 game".
DDR2 and DDR3 do not have the same notch, so you can't put DDR2 into a DDR3 motherboard. What I meant was to not insist on a motherboard that "officially supports" DDR3 1600, because those are few. Memory is rated, not set at a certain speed. Your DDR3 1600 will also run at 1500, 1400, 1300 and so on, only at each step, you'll be able to run it with tighter timings.

Also, even if you've just got money to burn, paying $1,500.00 for a cpu just doesn't seem right? You could have coin like Bill G., I'd still tell you what I thought was wasteful. Instead of the Intel Extreme, this will do: Newegg.com - Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Yorkfield 2.83GHz 12MB L2 Cache LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops It has the advantage of being $1,000.00 cheaper than the extreme, and it's only 400MHz slower. These Core2's can do 400MHz without trying. They normally clock around 1GHz faster than stock... at least, some more, some a little less, but 400MHz, pfff, no sweat.

Nehalem is to be released this year, and it's going to make your $1,500.00 Core2Extreme cpu and $400.00 motherboard look like a cheap Costco calculator. In a year from now you'll regret paying so much for stuff that's going to very soon be history.

Hi henning, I have had a short look over the post, however I would still recomend a P35 board with DDR2 memory. The latency between them is not that much. It works well use it:).

Hi, having truble with my pc now:mad: tryd to reply to your post a few times yesteday but it crashed trhee times so i gave up.Fumz i see your point with ram support and the prize on the QX9770 but im not upgrading my cpu now its way too expensive besides the Q9550 is for me moore realistick at a later date.Nehalem is not an option,i need to use the hardware that i have for now.My pc up til two weeks ago was Amd FX57 so its time for me to upgrade.Cpu and mobo was a gift,i bought the ram and graphics card.Anyway its at the end of the week now so im taking my pc apart after this post.Thank you for a burning interest and lots of good sugestions.I am not shure yet of witch boards i will chose but im kinda leaning towards ASUS P5E64 WS Evolution Workstation Motherboard. Thanks to all of you for help and support and see you again on the other side.

Warm regards
Henning

Re: Thanks for all your help but...Its all better now

Hi. I am a happy x64 vista user now:party:. My new mobo Rampage extreme is working rock solid. not even one BSOD so far and no problems with the games i tryd so far BF2,Flightsim X and Grid. My setup is identical as before exept for the mobo,so it was all the striker 2 extreme fault (Nvidia 790i ultra chipp) I am running on latest WHQL driver for my gtx260 but on the mobo im running on what was "in the box" but i did not install those AI and probe prog becuse i dont need them and im trying to keep my system free of small "bosses" that want control of things.I think i will stick with Inte chipsett to Intel cpu from now on,mabye it can prevent me from getting grey hair to early.I will do more testing of stability on my setup but so far its been flawless and Vista x64 Ultimate shines like the diamond it is.

Regards
Henning
