"the application binding data format is invalid" while attempting to install SP2

Hi guys,

I'm currently running Vista Home Premium x64 with SP1 and I am trying to install SP2 but I get this error:

"the application binding data format is invalid"

I have uninstalled "Windows Live OneCare" and switched off the firewall and this has had no affect. I have also ran the "System Update Readiness Tool" and this has done nothing to help the situation either. Also tried the "The System File Checker tool". It got to 19% and then said "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation"
Also when I try to install IE 8, I get this error code "800736b2".

I had to do a system restore earlier today as something was causing Vista to lock up and I could only turn the PC off by holding the power button. This has resolved the issue of the lock ups. Don't know if this could have anything to do with it?

Any ideas on how to fix these issues as they are driving me absolutely crackers!

Thanks in advance for any help solving these issues.

Cheers,

Ross

CheckSur created log C:\Windows\CBS\CheckSUR.log

Try run The System File Checker tool in safe mode next
Run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges (rightclick on this file as admin if you do it in normal mode)and type

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

On your desktop appear file sfcdetails.txt
Download firegenul tool:Altair Technologies Ltd.
Place firegenul.exe in C:\Windows\System32 +restart
Next run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges and type

firegenul

this command create readable log C:\Windows\System32\firegenulreport.htm

All three files:CheckSur.log,sfcdetails.txt,firegenulreport.htm pack and attache to post

"the application binding data format is invalid"
Also tried the "The System File Checker tool". It got to 19% and then said "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation"
These suggest also any corruption in WinSxS folder an/or in Component Based Servicing key but I also found this:http://www.vistax64.com/windows-updates/189485-error-800736b2-kb958644-update.html

Neverless try uninstall all protected software:firewall, antivirus -if still no help try install SP2 in safe mode

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

Within the Windows file, I have no file called CBS, so I have been unable to supply that.

I tried the System Checker Tool and I got the same error in Safe Mode.

All Firewall / Anti Virus tools have been uninstalled and SP2 still comes up with the same error (even in safe mode).

I have attached a ZIP file (as the attachments system wouldn't allow me to upload the .htm file) with the firegenulreport.htm & sfcdetails.txt.

Thanks for your help :D

Cheers,

Ross

Hi,

Sorry about that, I meant a folder (I have a habit of calling them files).

Just retrying the system readiness tool. As soon as it is done, I will check the folder.

Hi,

Well I have now installed System Readiness Tool and this time it worked. I still do not have that folder CBS in the windows folder. I did a search for the file name and windows found this file:

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS

This contains 5 files:

CBS
CBS.persist
CheckSUR
CheckSUR.persist
FilterList

I've uploaded the CheckSur file from there for you.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers,

Ross

Check this

Make sure these service are correct set:

Background Intelligent Transfer Service(BITS) start mode DELAYED AUTO
Cryptographic Services -start mode AUTO (started)
Volume Shadow Copy -start mode MANUAL (started)
DCOM Server Process Launcher start mode AUTO (started)

Try also this:How do I reset Windows Update components?

If still nothing help reinstall Windows Update Agent How to obtain the latest version of the Windows Update Agent to help manage updates on a computer

EDIT
Check you have this folder: C:\Users\<your account>\AppData\Local\Apps <-if yes remove this folder+restart

PS.The best way use any external file manager for example Total Commander to make sure all objects are visible.AppData folder is not visible in explorer on default settings

I've made hidden files and system files visible and there is no file within the file called Apps.

Why do computers have to be so confusing? Ha ha.

Thanks for your continued assistance with this problem, it is much appreciated.

Why do computers have to be so confusing? Ha ha.
I can't explain just now .Everything seems work fine and shouldn't be any trouble with installing.Try install SP2 from SYSTEM account:

Download PsTools PsTools
extract from this pack psexec.exe file and place in C:\Windows\System32
Next run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges (right click on cmd.exe as admin)
and type

psexec -s -i -d <exactly path for SP2>

for example:if SP2 is stored directly on C: you have to type:

psexec -s -i -d C:\Windows6.0-KB948465-X64.exe

(you want install 5-language version -right? )

My Computer

(you want install 5-language version -right? )

Yeah that's the version I downloaded.

I just followed your instructions and unfortunately the exact same error occurred.

Thanks,

Ross

Create another log from Event Viewer

Run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges and paste below text

WMIC /output:"c:\LOG.htm" path Win32_NtLogEvent WHERE "EventType="1"" GET Logfile, Message, SourceName, EventCode,Type, TimeGenerated /FORMAT:HTABLE:"sortby=LogFile"

On C: appear log.htm file ->attache this file to post

I just run that and got this error:

Clear all the files from c:\users\%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Apps, restat once And try again. There should not be any files inside the folder

Let me know the result :)

Thanks for all your help.

I'm all sorted now :D I only installed vista at the start of the week, so I had nothing much on the computer, so I just formatted it and instead of reinstalling using my Dell disk, I reinstalled using Windows Home Premium x64 with SP2 from MSDN and everything is working perfectly fine now.

Thank you very much for all your help, it is much appreciated.

Cheers,

Ross
