:cry::confused::o:eek:

"Limited" connectivity, though signal strength excellent for wireless internet.
Tried resetting network adapter.
Tried updating driver software in Device Manager: immediately computer claimed drivers are all fully up to date (how could it know this if it isn't online?). NB - no red or yellow marks next to the network adapter in Device Manager. Is Atheros AR5B91 Wireless Network Adaptor. Windows Vista Home Premium x64.
Tried ipconfig/release:
the requested operation requires elevation
Tried Ipconfig/renew:\
An error occurred unable to contact DHCP server. Request timed out. no operatino can be performed on Local area connection while it has its media disconnected.
Trying full virus scan.

First thing you should try is removing the security settings from your router, then try to connect.

Welcome to the forum.

Hmm... I think my landlord actually has the router - that's why I'm on wireless and can't connect the cable. He definitely wouldn't know anything about how to change the security settings on the router - he told me to check that my computer was plugged in when I told him I couldn't connect. Is there anything else I can try?

Oh... Hmmmm Its much harder to diagnos this way.

Is there any "unsecure" networks, or a friends network you can try to connect to?

What I'm trying to do is see if your computer has the issue, or the router. So Connecting to any other network will hel.

I've also tried the following fixes from other forums, and reran the ipconfig commands above as an administrator:
TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Vista or 7.

click on Start, now type cmd, and right click on it (Command Prompt), select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.
To Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: TYPE: netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit ENTER
Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log
Hit ENTER
Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log
HIT ENTER
REBOOT COMPUTER.

make sure that hte device is not being automatically turned off when the computer not in use - Device Manager --> your wireless USB adapter --> properties --> Power Management --> uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"

The standard fixes are:

1. In Device Manager, Properties, [select wireless NIC], Properties, Power
Management, uncheck "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power."

2. a) type regedit and press enter

b) path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\

c) registry option: DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag, double click on it, in
the value data box change the 1 to a 0

3. In Network & Sharing, select Manage Wireless Connections. Select your
wireless network and right click. Select properties. Uncheck Connect to a
more preferred network if available.

4. In Network & Sharing, select Manage Network Connections. Select the
Wireless Network Connection. Right click and select Properties. Uncheck
Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6). Uncheck QOS Packet Scheduler.
Click OK.

So I went to a cafe and found that the laptop which is having problems will connect to an unsecured wireless network there. I can connect to the wireless network at home with my netbook but not the laptop. Can an?yone suggest what I could do? Should I get the landlord to switch off and then on the (router, is it?) Or is there more I can do

Wow, some how missed all your replies, sorry bout that.

What I would do now that you know everything works, just not together, is to "Forget" and "Reconnect" the connection.

Go to: Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections

there you should be able to disconnect and forget the connection. Then try reconnecting.
