In November 2006, the yacht 'Maiken' was traveling in the South Pacific when theycame across a weird sight -

... It was sand in the water, and the sand was floating ON TOP of the waves..

Can you imagine the thrill of being the first & only people to see a new island being created,seemingly from nowhere?

Mother Nature in all her amazing spleandour!!! An awesome sight to behold.

Something strange is going on. I can see Dinesh's images on my works machine (running IE6), but NOT on my home system in W7 (IE8). I haven't tried Vista and IE7 yet, but I suspect that it has something to do with the version of IE. Will be interesting to see what XP Mode in W7 brings up, as XP uses IE6.

It must be. I'm using IE8, and Compatibility View made no difference. It just seems to be with .bmp images for some reason. :huh:

Compatibility View wouldn't make a difference anyway as I have set the site to always run in IE7 mode.

Hi guys, i see no reason why some of you cannot see the images. I posted this images using IE 6 using win xp from my office computer but i can also see these images using FF without any issues. Its a problem in IE8. See the image below when i used IE8:

Most of us are using IE8,(and maybe others browsers), not IE6 Dinesh. It must have something to do with IE8. And you can see them in FF, just not IE8.

I just added a note at the top of the main post informing users to use Google chrome or FF instead.

Wonderful photos Dinesh! I agree - the people on that yacht were incredibly fortunate to see that, and possibly a bit brave too. I wonder how much they knew about what it was they were witnessing until the actual volcanic eruption started.

There's a book called "Krakatoa" by Simon Winchester which is a great read. It talks about the 1883 eruption of the Krakatau volcano in the Straits of Sunda, one of the most powerful eruptions ever recorded. Thrity six thousand people were estimated to have died during the eruption itself, and the total would've been far higher had the surrounding land masses not blocked the tsunamis which were generated (a Dutch naval corvette of hundreds of tons was found several miles inland!) The most amazing thing is that the island basically disappeared. Then, after the start of the 20th century, locals started noticing smoke and ash rising from the water where Krakatau had been, and over several decades "Anak Krakatau", the child of Krakatau, slowly rose from the waves.

The "sand" is pumice rock. In 1883 they were apparently finding pieces of the settlements which used to be on Krakatau - and even corpses - floating on pumice rafts across the Pacific ocean, sometimes all the way to Africa.

I find historical records of that type completely fascinating

Please download the portable Firefox, you won't need to install it, just put it wherever you want and launch the browser from there. You can set the shortcut of it on the desktop as well. I use portable version only. Try it you won't be disappointed.

Not in as much detail, no, but I've read Wikipedia articles about it. If you've got any good books about it to recommend, I'd love to know.

Dinesh I've seen the photos now thanks to Dwarf but I certainly wouldn't have gone to get another browser just to see them
