Good discussion, I am going to call HP and get their take on it. I'll keep you all posted.
I also got an email from HP UK after I logged a support call advising me to upgrade the bios before installing the SP.
Your right, It most likely was a hardware issue.I've been told that the BIOS does not affect the software side of things, i.e Vista, but I think that the hardware glitches may have been fixed with the update?

Can someone please tell me if the info about the registry in the post below is still correct? My registry info is pasted after the post.

Re: Windows Help and Support not available anymore
Vista standard would be
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.xml]
@="xmlfile"
"Content Type"="text/xml"
"PerceivedType"="text"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.xml\OpenWithList]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.xml\OpenWithList\winword.exe]
@=""
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.xml\PersistentHandler]
@="{7E9D8D44-6926-426F-AA2B-217A819A5CCE}"
