Solved Trojan.gen FTL

Hey everyone,

I recently have had a few problems with my computer seeing as I downloaded a video file which must have had a virus in it. It started with pop-ups, then disappeared for a while.

Just today I've been trying to start programs up and instantly, I get the message "---- has stopped working".

I've tried installing new anti-virus software, however, when I try to install it I get the message that there are either missing attributes, or that the program isn't responding again.

This is the same with the system restore - my computer won't let me start one due to the fact that it's not responing.

I think my laptop is 64bit. I can't check right this second seeing as my computer won't even let me go onto the properties section of "my computer"

I have windows Vista, the laptop is a Sony Vaio AR71-M. I know that probably won't be a lot of help, but it's the best I got at the moment!

Going to restart my computer, but any suggestions would be very helpful - I'm only an amateur with computers though, so be kind

I am sorry it took so long for a response.

Our security expert is on holiday, so I recommend you post in a malware removal forum where they can assist you as none here but her are qualified to deal with a trojan of this nature and you really shouldn't wait much longer. Please go to: Infected with Trojan.Gen & Packed.Cupx!gen2.

First, that particular thread deals with a similar situation, but you should not follow those instructions as they are specific for that particular situation. Instead, click to register (for free). Then read the rules and instructions on how to request assistance and what to include in your first post. Once you've registered and have completed the initial steps and are ready, create a new thread and post as instructed. Someone there will assist you.

Ahah! That's absolutely fine, I wondered where all the clever people had gone

I think I've managed to fix it with help from one of the malware removal guides on here, plus a lot of hard work and restoring haha.

Hi Matia,

These particular virusus are very bad and extremely tough to completely eradicate and even I wouldn't try to do so on my own (or trust my efforts even if all seemed OK to me). I simply do not have the proper training or access to the proper tools or the ability to analyze the results of various tests (or know for certain which ones to run and in what order). And I may also not fully understand the consequences of being wrong (until perhaps too late) - in some cases, the only safe choice is a clean boot while in others it is possible to cleanse the system (but need to recognize it may have been compromised).

That said, I'm happy you believe you've resolved the problem and have requested this thread be marked as solved; however, I still recommend that you have your system checked out by a real expert (remember, it can be done for free) to make sure. If you want, I will request our security expert here drop by and take a quick look and give you an opinion concerning that particular infection (and I'm sure she will also help you if you desire the help).
