unable to download Windows updates and no sound

Somewhere, probably on one of these forums, it was suggested I use Microsoft Fix it to clean my Windows update queue, but its not working. I let it run for over an hour and a half. It never moves past 'Installing PowerShell please wait'. Update sits at 'downloading 0%' and never downloads the updates.

When I do get Windows updates to download in the past, the Sound chip/RealTek Digital output produces no sound.

I've checked the HDMI cable, its fine when I use my monitor as a television. Plug the cable back into the computer; no sound but I get a picture. Also, not currentl;y getting sounds out of my computer. None.

Sometimes deleting all of the sound devices in Device Manager brings the sound output back, occasionaly it doesn't.

Any suggestions on how to fix these two problems ?

No, getting another computer, nor upgrading the OS, aren't options.

Yeah, I get busy... and then thought I wasn't going to be using my Vista computer again. And it was working whenever I booted it up.

Any, if I could find a solution for my sound chip, after software install for other items, not working that would be great.

Typically after Windows updates is when sound stops working. No place to put a sound card, the one slot is taken up with a video card. Other times it isn't working when I turn the computer on.

This time it started working about an hour after I deleted the 5 sound devices from Device Manager and rebooted. No idea why it took an hour. Typically it should start working with in just a few minutes of a restart as it re-installs the drivers.

I've tried that in the past, but it generally doesn't last. Windows updates, sound stops. Deleting them from Device Manager and rebooting does work, but not permanently and not always on the first try.

Of course, now that Windows Updates doesn't work on my Vista computer, sound should hopefully keep working.

I don't install driver updates through windows update so try unchecking the sound driver from windows updates.
