"unable to install HP c5280 printer, error message 0x000003eb"

Hello,

I have a HP C5280 printer which has to date been working with no problems.I up-dated the driver soft ware as a download, which was successfully installed, however, when it came time to plug in the printer,it failed to install.I tried to add the printer manually, but the "error message 0x000003eb" kept occuring.I've contacted Hewlett Packard for help and - to their credit - tried fairly extensively to help solve the problem, but concluded it was a computer problem.I have un-installed/re-installed the software several times, but nothing seems to work. The printer is not listed in the printers box,but the software is recognised. The printer works in every other way.

I really would appreciate some help,as this is a complete mystery.
Thank you,
Tanya

Hi there,

Thanks for your reply.I tried a system restore, but to no avail, same problem unfortunately, despite re-installing new software again.

This issue occurs right at the end of the software installation, when connection to the printer is being attempted. All of the software + drivers is showing on the computer,it just wont talk to the printer! It seems that the windows driver installer over-rides the sofware installer step when it asks you to conect the USB cable.I can't determine if this is a HP issue or a windows issue ( one is saying the other ),but there must be a solution somewhere!

Thanks again for the reply...any other ideas?

Try this.

Go to Control Panel.
Choose printer.
Then choose Add Printer.
Choose Add a local printer.
Click on Create a new port.
The default in the drop down box is Local Port. Do not change that.
Click Next.
A dialogue box will appear asking for you to enter a port name. Type in
the \ computer name \ printer name.

Good luck and post your results..

Hi there,
Thanks for replying,I truely am a newbie,so your assistance is much appreciated!I tried your suggestion but not sure if done correctly. When it came to the step for choosing the list of printers to choose from, it doesn't specifically include mine ( HP Photosmart C5280 ) it did ,however, install another version - which didn't print but i thought I would try...Could you please clarify your previous instruction....

for computer name do you mean brand of computer (mine is a Toshiba )?

I feel I'm doing something wrong somewhere.

Thanks,Tanya

It just means, what you call your PC, and what you call your printer, Home PC/Printer 1, its just so you can recognise them on a network..

I have the same printer and dread when I have to reinstall Windows and re-install the printer. Nothing but a pain. I do not use any of the HP software. I just let Windows install the printer. It asks for the cd and installs the drivers off of that. What you can also try (if you do indeed need the software) is to uninstall all traces of HP software from your computer and reboot. Re-install the software. When it asks you to connect the printer, don't. Skip that step and let everything install. When it is done, reboot and then plug the printer in. This sometimes worked for me. Good luck!

I, too, had problems reinstalling an HP printer. HP tried to help but it didn't work. I finally found a solution on an HP Business forum from someone in Europe. As Bornloser said, uninstall everything, but afterwards you will still have to search for remnants and manually delete them, being careful not to delete anything needed. Sorry I don't have the list of the files, it was a while back. You will find empty directories: delete the directories. Go into C:\Users\yourusername and keep going down deeper to find these remnants. You might want to go into Control Panel Folders and uncheck hide hidden files or something like that, just to be sure. You can recheck it later. When you think you are finished go to computer and do a search for HP and then a search for Hewlitt Packard. These files are scattered all over and uninstall does not get rid of them.
