Solved Upgrade to Windows 7 ??

Hi all, I have been a computer and Vista user for the past 16 months.
I did have a few problems with Vista when I first got my computer, but after a couple of months of the odd freeze, I found Vista to run beautifully, with no problems at all.
I have learn't a lot with regard to computing and along the way have learn't to use the Vista OS, which I like enormously.

Having seen what Windows 7 offers, I don't see much that I would use, other than a few neat tricks here and there....

My question is, do I need to fork out the extra dollars for Windows 7 ?? ( I'd rather not ) And does anyone know how long Vista will be supported for??

I would hope I can hold on to 200 dollars for the upgrade and keep using Vista.

My impression, is that Windows 7 is pretty much a slightly improved version of Vista, which for me....is working beautifuly.

it is easier to work around with, and will be faster using apps, as microsoft has stripped down codes. i think it is a huge improvement, and i know this because i downloaded the release candidate; huge performance increase, easier to use, a really cool taskbar, homegroup and a new personalization centre that is really easy to use.
no-one's gonna force you to buy, but it is a good upgrade anyway.
here is another way of putting it - you buy one decent graphics card, which has really good performance (vista) but you can upgrade to an sli or crossfirex configuration (7); it won't be the full extra worth the money, but a good upgrade nevertheless.

your absolutely right ive tested both side by side and apart from a few extra "bits" it has nothing new to offer over a nice stable Vista install , if your happy with Vista its not worth the money

oh yeah, another thought, directx 11 is a key feature of windows seven.

Thanks guys....do you think there will be Vista support in the future, or will it fall by the wayside and we wil have to install Windows 7.

i have DX11 on Vista now and it will soon be released worldwide as an update.

there will be Vista support for many years to come yet mate , they are legally obliged to keep it up and running as they are for XP so dont worry

Archie is right there is no panic about support, Microsoft is going to support XP up until 2014 so Vista has a long way to go (I got Dx11 in a recent set of updates released for Vista but dx diag was the only app that recognised it??) I got a free copy of 7 from HP and i like it but i still love Vista if i was thinking about changing & having to pay for it i would wait till a service pack is released & purchase an upgrade disk with service pack included & do a clean Install

I tested the RC and didnt like it relative to Vista. To me Windows 7 is Vista "Lite", its all the same just made more flashy and condensed some services. Vista will be supported for a very long time especially since PCs still come with them OEM and you can still buy it retail. 2014 is the expected time frame or XP support to end...a decade plus of support. You can almost guarantee support till 2020 and you have no idea what OS we will have then. To me the DX11 doesnt matter since my hardware doesnt support it. Simply put "why fix it if it ain't broken?".

Thank you all for your replies....will keep Vistering along here, I guess my initial thoughts were correct...Vista works well and no particular need to upgrade for a couple of extra bells and whistles, good to know support will be around and I'll save a couple of hundred bucks.
