hi im not sure if this is in the correct forum, i dont really use these much

im having a prob with vista hm premeum 32bit

im having a problem with one of my usb ports. when using none of the ports at all, vista will randomly "find" a usb device and tell me that it can perform faster. even though there is nothing plugged in (spooky)

so after much confusion, i tried to plug my external hard drive in to all my ports (1tb buffallo if your woundering) and when i plugged it into the last one, my computer got a blue screen, with writing on it ( not the blue screen of death tg) saying that it has a problem with one of the usb drivers, and that it needs to shut down to save the computer it only does this when i use this port though. otherwise i just get the "this device can perform faster" thing popping up ever 10 mins or so

i really cant handel loosing one of my usb's so much help would be appriceated

Is it the blue screen that you experienced looked like this?: http://pcmaccomputerrepair.com/images/blue-screen-of-death1.jpg

Doesnt have to match the writing.

If so:

Check the c:windows\minidump folder and compress the file, and upload it in your next post.

If you find nothing there then:

The next time this blue screen happens, please enable minidumping: Blue screen of death troubleshooting tips

Once you have the crashlog (minidump) then compress it and upload it in your next post.

However, if it isnt the bsod, tell me what that screen says.

i also tried to just compress the files inside the minidump folder, but then i got a different error, ACCESS DENIED, in not so many words

Hi taits,

You copied the minidump file to your desktop, i.e. the one named Minimmdd10.dmp? And that's now on your desktop? That's what you're trying to compress? I'm just making sure because you said "folder", not file.

If so, just upload the file; forget about compressing (see Vista Forums - FAQ: Reading and Posting Messages)

In addition could you run the MSInfo tool (Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information), click on File and Save to your desktop (Name it MSInfo.nfo). Upload it as well.

Your external HD has to be reformatted. It happens all the time.

Kind of strange though, completely defeats the purpose of using an External Hard Drive if you have to back up your Ext. HD files on other storage media.

Download the attached file to your desktop, double-click on it, and try to upload the Minidump folder/files again.

Somehow i think its an usb driver problem. But we cant be sure untill we look at the minidump.

If it is absolutely impossible to upload the minidump in any way/shape/form then the next time you get the bsod, copy down the stop code, and post it in your next reply. And if you see a driver (a file with .sys extension), copy the name of that file and post it also. If you want you can also take a picture of it <<-- that is alright with me, except most pictures of computer screens are blurry)

If the bsod goes too fast for you to read/copy down then do this: Ok, Press the WinKey(next to CTRL key) + pause key, this will bring up your Sytem Properties screen, click on Advanced tab, then scroll down to "Startup & Recovery" and UNCHECK the box next to "Automatically Restart". Then the next time you get the BSOD, there will be an explanation as to why it crashed!

1. What's the exact model (and Service Tag if there is one) of your computer; I know it's an HP Pavilion dv6700, but which exact model? Should be on the system tag on the bottom of your computer or under the battery.

2. Click Start > Run, and type in perfmon /report, in the viewer window that opens, save as a HTML file and upload.

It appears to be a usb driver problem.

Couldn't find any newer drivers.

You could try this:

Troubleshooting USB Connections in Windows Vista - HP technical support (United Kingdom - English)

Also, try removing and reinstalling all USB controllers, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Click the Hardware tab.
  3. Click the Device Manager button.
  4. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  5. Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers node, and then click Uninstall to remove them one at a time.
  6. Restart the computer, and then reinstall the USB controllers.
  7. Plug in the removable USB storage device, and then test to make sure that the issue is resolved.
Beyond that, I'm at a loss

Let us know if you get it fixed.
