USB Version-1 or 2?

USB Version

I am trying to determine what USB version I have. I use Vista Home Premium. My search tells me if my Device Manager USB designation has the word Enhanced, the version is 2.0. If the designation has the words Host Controller, it would be version 1.1 or lower.

When I view that listing, it lists both designations. What does that mean? See attachment.

Thanks,
Jerry

USB 2.0 ports have backwards compatibility with 1.0 so technically if you have 2.0 you also have 1.0. Hence the entries you are looking at. You are correct that the enhanced controller is for 2.0.

Thanks for the reply. You really need to see my attachment to understand my question. However, after trying many times I was unable to upload the attachment. So, unless I can figure out how to do it, I am out of luck.

I know it is confusing, but my attachment would help explain my question. Anyway, I am going to the General Forum and get assistance on how to post attachments. When I find out, I will repost my question.

Thanks,

USB Version 1 or 2 Again

It seems to say some USBs are one version and some are another version. Why would I have two versions of USBs on the same computer and how would I know which USB is what version?

Also, more confusing, is my search showed me two different USB symbols that could be on my computer case. One symbol was for USB 1.0 and the other was for USB 2.0. In my case, the symbol on the front of my case agreed with USB 1.0

See attachment.

You have USB 2.0 but those other entries are there because of backwards compatibility. In other words USB 2.0 slots also handle 1.0 devices. I explained that in my post. Did you read it?

BTW the USB standard is hardware-based and has nothing really at all to do with your operating system. It appears as townsbg has said, you have 2.0, which includes 1.0

Hello townsbg –

It appears I offended you in my post – sorry. Yes, I did read your post. In my defense, I tried to indicate the number of times my Device Manager and further research told me I could have USB 1.0 and USB 2.0. And, I see now they are backwards compatible. But, that being said, I wanted to know if they were all operating at 2.0 speed. USB management has been somewhat difficult for me to fully understand; it appears you did not recognize my confusion. Anyway, from what I understand, all of my ports should be operating at 2.0 speed.

Thanks to all for working with me.

Jerry

My Computer

I'm not offended. From my experience with my Mom's computer if you put a 2.0 device in a 1.0 port you get a warning in the lower right hand corner that the device could be performing faster. I believe that you get the same thing if the device is behaving poorly. Provided that the device is compatible windows will automatically pick the best speed. Any problems with speed would probably be hardware related. Anyway I hope this helps.

Thanks for the return. To us 82-year-old senior citizens, we often need any additional information in this technical age of computers. I surmise your mother knows what I am talking about.
