User Account Control (UAC) issues

Hello everyone.

Anyhow, i have problems with UAC account setting:
- I can only disable UAC account via msconfig.
- If using Control Panel, I am not able to click any link that has the shield logo beside it. The window will appear and simply dissappear seconds after.

By using the standard Administrator setting (not the true Administrator access):
- I cannot perform Windows Update. Error 8007005
- I cannot log-in to Windows Messenger. Same error message
- I can connect to my wireless router, but the icon is showing as 'not connected'
- So far i found out that i cannot change the sound and mouse setting
- I cannot uninstall program
- i cannot change my anti-virus setting

Question 1:
- Are the above is what is supposed to happen when using standard Administrator setting?

If no:
- Should I consider Vista repair or clean re-install?

If yes:
- I would like to have UAC security but with true Administrator access. Is this possible? If so, should I consider enable the built-in Administrator and set-up password?

Hello Ymi7, and welcome to Vista Forums.

With those issues, you might consider doing a System Restore using a restore point dated before these problems or a repair install.

The built-in administrator account is the only one with true full power, but UAC is not active in this account. A standard administrator account has the same power, but you just have to approve an administrator action with UAC first before it is allowed.

Hello Brink,

Thank you for replying.

It has been like this since I switched it on after buying it about 3 weeks ago.

I looked into System restore but it only trace back to 1 week ago only.

Understood your explanation that it is not possible to have built-in administrator control with UAC turned on, but at the moment i feel that my standard administrator is not performing as it should? ie cannot log in to windows messenger, cannot transfer file via yahoo messenger, no full function of Control panel, Windows Update is possible when 'Run as Administrator' but installing will not happen somehow.

Unless that is how standard Administrator function is, then i'll choose to elevate option as i hate not to be able to be in control of my own laptop.

Appreciate your input if whether my standard Administrator is functioning properly or not in the first place. Thank you.

Ymi7,

No this is not normal behavior for the standard administrator account. I would recommend to either do a clean reinstall of Vista, or try a repair install instead. :(
