Solved Users Issue

Hello folks,

I'm running Vista Home Premium and I've had a little issue with the quick launch buttons on my HP and I needed to reinstall the OS but failed miserably. I had to send in the laptop and they told me all they did is update the BIOS and it worked fine.

Well ever since I had it back, I've noticed that there is user called "test" but I can't find it anywhere. I've created an admin user with my name, but that user will come on in the DOS command, I can see it everywhere but not my username.

It has bugged me a lot and I didn't do much about it, but now I really need to find a solution to change this "test" username to mine.

Try this

Open the CMD window by Run As Administrator (find it in start-programs-accessories)

Type

NET USER test /DELETE

into the CMD window

Doesn't that link to my current username though? and might delete my current username?

I typed in "net user test" and the description was as follows.

Hello Egydarceyes,

It sounds like you or the shop had created a user account named Test on your laptop.

If you go into User Accounts from the Control Panel (Classic View) and click on the Manage another account link, do you have any other administrator accounts listed other than Test. If so, log into that account and just delete the Test account. If not, then create a new administrator account with the name you want and delete the Test account afterwards from within the new account.

You can only change the C:\Users\(User Name) folder name by creating a new account and deleting the old one. Just changing the user account name in User Accounts from the Control Panel (Classic View) does not change this.

I have tried going to manage users account and the only account I see is mine (as an administrator).

Do you think I should create an account called "test" as admin then delete it? I have thought of that, but I'm not sure if it'll do anything.

If I click on C drive > users... all I see is the "test" account which is linked to my name.

As expected.

I created an account called "test" and when I went into the CMD.. it displayed the account name as "test_2"...
Then I went in net user test_2 /delete and the account was deleted. Of course if I try this same thing for "test" it will delete my current account, leaving me with ZERO accounts.

Mina,

It look like your account was originally named Test and changed to the name you have in User Accounts, but this will still show as Test in the C:\Users\Test location for that account.

To fix all of this, you will need to create a new administrator account and delete all the others afterwards from within the new account. While deleting the old account, select the Keep Files option to place the contents of the old account user folder in a folder on the desktop of the new account so you can copy them back over.

I'm afraid I've tried that already once Shawn.
I have created an account called "test" as an admin and when I looked at the path of the new account it was C:\Users\Test_2 making me believe that it's just incrementing the "test" name when I create multiple accounts.

I think you're completely right, when they re-installed the operating system on it, the original name for the new owner of the operating system is test and I'm stuck with that.

Do you know if there is an easier fix through the registry keys?


I was really intrigued to check up on the registry to see if there is an easy way to fix it and sure enough the registered owner is called "test", I'm going to put in my name and restart and I'll let you know if the path has changed or not.

After you have created your new administrator account (Ex: Mina) and deleted the other ones (ex: Test with the new name showing instead) in User Accounts from within the new Mina account, you can then safely delete the C:\Users\Test folder if you wanted to.

If it still does not work for you, then I would do a clean reinstall of Vista to only have the administrator account with your name on it instead and at the C:\Users\(User Name) location.

Sorry about that - I read your original post and my mind saw that you wanted to delete test rather than rename it.

That's ok Rich. It turns out that Test would have to be deleted anyway to rename the C:\Users\Test folder.
