various things lock up after a variable amount of time

Not very descriptive, but so the computer goes.

Lets say I am updating a blog. And I refresh a number of times, once for each post.

Not always the same amount of refreshes, but eventually I get the spinner upper right, and the status bar says either 'Done' or 'Stopped'.

If I check email, first time fine. I close email. Over the next 2-5 hours, I open email again, close again, open again, Mozilla Thunderbird newest version, and it says cannot connect. The number of times it will work and then stop, varies.

To fix either, I reboot, no need to do anything else, and they work fine again.

I get the impression that if I have to connect to anything outside my home computer, this occurs. I haven't tried all software, but it happens with email, both browsers, and connecting to Everquest.

So it isn't just one type of site/server. Just anything outside my home computer. I'm the only user and admin.

Any ideas ?

Type event viewer in search and look for errors about the time that it happened.

Type memory diagnostic in search and look for memory problems.

Thanks, but the results I found don't seem to have anything to do with my problem.


A reboot does fix it every time.

Hmm. If I keep trying too much, it becomes very difficult to restart or shutdown.

I can select restart, wait at least 3 minutes, nothing. Try again, sometimes it works. Or about the 4th or 5th time, select shutdown instead, that can work.

Doesn't seem to be consistant in how many times I try shutdown or restart before it
works.

Sometimes, I get the browser/email doesn't work, and it restarts first time I try it. Which can take place up to 5 minutes later.

I wont have time for that until this weekend.

Oh, defragging has no effect. No difference before or after defrag. I use Diskeeper 2009 to do the defrag and I have it set to notice the vss on my boot partition.

I tried going back to an earleir restore point. They didn't work. I didn't try a recent restore point thoguh as I wanted to get far enough back to try and bypass the problem. But I only had the past 30 days, back to May 5, 2010.

I am fairly certain the problem went back before that.


I am beginning to think its a patch causing the problem. I did have a tutorial install, but I removed it. The tutorial was for my A+ cert tests. Which I passed. 220-701 and 220-702.

Anyway, back to the subject at hand.


It could be one of the 'extra' patches to make Vista compatible with older games that is doing it.

I have kinda been thinking of installing the Windows 7 upgrade. The Win& upgrade advisor says my system can handle it. But I have to wait and see how much the new transmission for my car is going to take. They told me it was under warranty...

Any other suggestions ?

i would first run diagnose and repair on your network connection also check the error page/diagnostic test on your router/cable modem etc. check your firewall log for any events. check that if your modem is wireless that wep/wap is running and noones stealing bandwdth.
run a selection of malware tools in safe mode as none catch all bugs.
check your hardware, netcard, cables, wall socket for any bad connections etc

wait, so your problems are internet related? any offline work such as writing in ms word, doing photoshopping offline gaming, work fine correct?

if this is an internet problem only, try pinging with the cmd and see what you get.

try to reinstall your network drivers, and if connected to a router, try connecting your computer straight to the modem itself.


if there are really just so many things that are going wrong with your OS, id suggest a reinstall (hence the title: various things lock up).

All wired connections, as I don't like wireless.

I don't know for certain they are only internet related or not since the activities on my computer I spend lots of time on, is updating my web pages, online forums, email, etc.

I have Open Office. Next time this lock up happens, I'll open Open Office.

Oh, I don't think its the internet connection, as I have problems shutting down or restarting the computer once this lockup happens. I try for as long as 20 minutes to get the computer to shut down.

A few times I have had to manually power down.


I have even thought of upgrading to Windows 7. Can't do it now financially though.
