Solved video card upgrade for my ASUS X1700 ?

JimJoe

Vista Guru
I currently have a NVIDIA GeForce G100 in it, 256 meg video card. This desktop computer has a mini tower. Vista Home Premium, sp 2.

I was wondering if the video card can be replaced by a 512meg video card ?

Thanks !

I can post my dxdiag.txt if requested.

Can you link your system?
Cause i'm thinking this is a laptop, and while it seems like its actually switchable, it's quite different than a desktop.

If i'm right about it being a laptop, check this forum..... Notebook Manufacturers This is where i got all my laptop upgrade info from.

Probably shoulda looked there but it slipped my mind.

The biggest issue you have is it only has a 220W power supply. No add in card i know of will run on it.

You will need a larger power supply of atleast 300W to run the base cards.

These are your only choices Newegg.com - Computer Hardware, Power Supplies, Power Supplies, Mini ITX
And they suck.

You might want to consider a new case and psu to stick your parts in to as its just a bit more expensive then a psu update..

But to answer your question, any low profile gpu will work with the proper psu

I don't think the case can take a physically larger PSU.

I haven't have a chance to site down and look the card over carefully, so I'll decide after I do that.

No, it can't. Theres only 1 psu large enough to run a decent card on newegg.

That's why I suggested getting a new case and power supply and swaping everything.

Problem for me is when I do that at home, the computer stops working. I do it at work, it is fine. I don't do anything different. Maybe its the carpet at my apartment. I'll think about it.

I use one of the APC uninterruptible power supplies between my computers and the wall socket. I think static electricity from the carpet is more likely.

I found this one on newegg.

ASUS ENGT439/Di/GD3(LP) GeForce GT430 DDR3 PCI Express 2.0x16 for $60.

I don't know if my Aspire computer is PCI Express or PCI Express 2.0.

Okay, I found it on Asus' web site, it is PCI Express 2.0 And one of the reviews on newegg said it works with his 220 watt PSU.

Yha, though they spec 300W, 250W will probably do it.

It doesn't say a PSU requirement on the newest one I posted. So I'll take a chance...

Well, I ordered it. No PSU requirements shown on the NewEgg page or the manufacturer's page. I do have a larger case with a big power supply, but it never worked. I'll post back the results. But some real life things have come up... don't know when I'll have time to install it.
