can't i just buy a key and activate this copy?, do i have to buy an upgrade and lose everything a have in the pc?

Yes, all you need is a key. When you buy a DVD with a key, its the key that you pay for. You may get a key and a DVD. Just use the key number, you do not have to reinstall or anything. You can save the DVD in case of problems, with the DVD, you can reinstall or make repairs, if ever necessary

Once again to be sure. Buy a key, which may come with a DVD, Just use the key, no need to use the DVd, now.

hi guys.. its me one more time.. i need help!!!! same laptop next problem.. i already activate windows ultimate X32 but now i got a msg that say i need to backup cuz this version of windows is a prerelease version.. do i really need to buy a new OS disk?... plz i need help ASAP..

I do not know the source of the message, etc, but you must have the final release of Vista. All the others have expired. Microsoft lets you use and test their product, but one day they want you to pay to use it.

I do not understand. You have a valid code, but not the DVD, how did this happen? I just want to understand the problem, so that I may be able to help.

ok.. im the army guy in iraq, i got this laptop from a friend who already were re-deployed back home he gave me the laptop but not the disk so i bought a new key and i activate windows, but now i got a msg that say something about pre-release version and i have to back up and install a new OS... but i dont understand cuz its registered to me....

any ideas?

I just checked the early posts, I remember, now. I do not know of a way to avoid buying a new DVD. But, there may be a way. Call this Number, it is for Micorosoft in Iraq.

Tell them the problem, I am sure they will help. I do not see why you would have to pay, again, if you have a key. YOu may have to back up and reinstall, however.

The number that I gave you is the activation center. First try to activate with a touch tone phone, if not successful a rep will talk to you and give you the opportunity to explain the situation.
