Hello X-AMP and welcome to the forums

Could you answer the following questions for us please, they should give us a better understanding of the problem and how we can go about solving it :)

Do you have a Vista installation DVD?
If so, do you know if it has SP2 on it?
How long ago did you install SP2?
Have you always had a problem with SP2? Or is it a recent change?
Did you download SP2 through Windows Update or from the Microsoft website?

Tom

X-AMP, can you download and install Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware please:

Malwarebytes

Run a FULL scan and post back the log for us please.

Please ignore this X-AMP, do not follow any of the following instructions.

This is aimed at any other member trying to solve this problem.

I'm running out of ideas guys, the only things I can think of now are:

  • Get a friend of his to slipstream a SP2 installation disc and do a repair install from that. I doubt we'll do this as it would take ages and a friend of his would have to reinstall Vista.
  • Clean install
  • System Restore. Its extremely unlikely that he has a system restore point from 1.5 years ago but it may be worth a shot.
Let me know what you guys think of these and please suggest other options, I'm stuck :(

Hello all!

Sorry for the late arrival.

@tom982 and all of the others: I only have a few ideas.

Firstly, it sounds very much like an incompletely installed Service Pack to me.

I am going to run the System Update Readiness Tool. It may well find this SP2 corruption. If it does, we go from there, depending on what is found.

I will then also take some other logs. In particular, CBS.log. This has the ability to show us very clearly what is wrong, however, it is very, very hard to find the issue. It is not about searching for the word "Error " (yes, with the space) or "(F)", but about noticing a very subtle, but extremely important inconsistency appearing somewhere.

I warn you now that I am not very good at these very subtle inconsistencies. To find them requires vast amounts of experience, and not tutorials. It is quite likely that I will not be able to find the one subtle inconsistency. I do know someone who would find it, someone far older and wiser than I, and if really necessary, we can get him in.

However, in the mean time, I shall use CheckSUR.log, and take some other logs, in the hope of seeing something...anything.

Also, there are more powerful ways of uninstalling a Service Pack. They require extraction, creation of the backup and temp dirs, and batch files, but are completely supported Microsoft with an excellent rate of success. Think we have tried to uninstall SP2 using every method? Think again! We haven't yet tried the methods for uninstalling corrupt updates!

@X-AMP: Please download and install the correct version of the System Update Readiness Tool: Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2

Please copy the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\ folder to your Desktop, copy C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log into the new CBS folder on your Desktop, right click on the new CBS folder on your Desktop > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder, and upload the new file which is created on your Desktop here. If necessary, see here for how to upload a file here: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/289032-screenshots-files-upload-post-vista-forums.html

Thanks!

Richard
