Vista download problem

My son gave me his old laptop with Vista Premium on it. SP2. I have been puttering around with it, updating utilities and replacing some Browsers. Right now, IE9, Firefox 52.9, and Opera are working. I can see most websites. IE9 crashes on some.
Right now, my problem is nothing will download. I get to about 30%-50% then download crashes. (file corrupt, try again). This happens in all the Browsers. Got to be a Vista thing. Some setting has to be blocking the down loads. Using Panda AV. If there is a setting, I can't find it.
I had something similar in Windows 10 and found out it was Windows Defender blocking downloads. But can't find any setting in Vista defender.

Any ideas?

Have you tried with Panda turned off.
When you use panda do you have Windows Defender turned off?
Remember only one anti-virus should be running at a time.
After reading some reports a couple of years ago I don't use any anti-virus software now.
I use a key scrambler and a two way firewall and scan regularly with MalwareBytes and have never had a problem

Turned Panda off, removed Panda, turned off Defender. Nothing. From what I've read, the Defender for Windows 10 is good enough to stand alone, but not the older ones.
P.S. Isn't Defender supposed to turn off when it detects another AV program?

There is a known issue with Vista SP2 computers that can seriously degrade system performance - see the Vista Forums FAQ How to Fix Vista SP2 "Checking for Updates..." Hangs and Slow Windows Updates. If you are affected by this problem your unfinished Windows Updates will saturate an entire CPU core, and I've heard of instances where this problem eventually became so severe that it caused file downloads to time out and abort.

Try running a manual Windows Update (Control Panel | System and Maintenance | Windows Update | Check for Updates). If your Windows Update gets stuck at "Checking for updates..." for more than 30 min, disable automatic Windows Updates [Control Panel | System and Maintenance | Windows Update | Change settings | Important updates | Never check for updates (not recommended)] and re-boot to terminate any Windows Update sessions currently running in the background.

If your computer is affected by these "Checking for updates..." hangs post back and let us know if you have a 32-bit or 64-bit OS, plus the KB number of your Internet Explorer 9 Update Version as shown in the image below. Go to Help | About Internet Explorer - you should have IE9 Update Version v9.0.60 / KB4014661 if your OS is patched to 11-Apr-2017 when extended support ended for Vista SP2. Older MS Office products like MS Office 2007, MS Office 2010 and/or the MS Office Compatibility Pack SP3 can also cause these "Checking for updates...." hangs on a Vista SP2 computer (even if Vista is patched to April 2017) so let us know if you have a Microsoft Office product installed on this computer as well.

I have tried...IE9, Firefox 52.9, and Opera. All the same results. The longer it downloads, the slower it gets. Then around 30-50% download it stops, afew minutes later it says, file corrupted, try downloading again.

IceDragon is a Firefox fork. The last version to support Vista was 52.0.0.4, which was only available in 32 bit. Your Firefox 52.9 browser is actually more
up-to-date than that, and making Firefox your default browser (even if you prefer to browse with something else) should improve the chances that stub installers will run successfully on Vista.

P.S. Isn't Defender supposed to turn off when it detects another AV program?

Not the old antispyware version included with Vista and Windows 7. Some antivirus installers will turn it off, but not Panda. However I would suggest that you turn it off yourself to avoid false positives. There was a tutorial How to Turn Windows Defender On or Off, but this website isn't what it used to be.

It installed successfully. As you know, I have a 64 bit system.

I didn't try the 64 bit in the last link milford provided.

I'm afraid the information on that page is quite outdated. (The FAQs also tell you that there is not yet a 64-bit version.) No fork of Firefox 63 or 64 is going to work on Vista, no matter if wither 3 says it "installed successfully." Here's a Comodo thread posted more than a year ago.

The requested info, in order :
1) Running 64 Bit Vista Home Premium with SP2.
2) IE9- Version: 9.0.8112.16421IC Update Ver. 9.0.48 (KB3139929)
3) Tried Manual Windows Update. Nothing except spinning arrow.
4) Turned off Updates.
5) Downloaded the "5 Speed-up Patches",from different computer. Transferred via USB drive. Installed. All installed.
6) IE9 now shows 9.0.60 (KB4014661)
7) I do have MS Office Small Business 2007 installed. Have not touched this yet.
8) No change in download status.

Go to Accessories, System Tools, Disk Cleanup. Run it. When it says how much space it can regain, check the boxes for Temporary Files and Recycle Bin. Let it run and reboot after it finishes.

KB3139929 was the cumulative security update for IE9 released in March 2016 so you're probably missing about a year's worth of Vista SP2 security updates released between March 2016 and the end of extended support in April 2017.

You will likely have to install four more "speed up" patches associated with MS Office 2007: KB4018353 (Excel 2007), KB4018355 (Word 2007) plus KB4461607 (xlconv2007) and KB4018354 (wordconv2007) for the MS Office Compatibility Pack SP3, since this Compatibility Pack add-on is included in most MS Office 2007 installations. Download links for those .msu standalone installers are available in Volume Z's post on page 1 of peggybeggs' thread why has vista stopped automatic updates? in the MS Answers forum, which Volume Z recently updated for the March 2019 Patch Tuesday update of 12-Mar-2019.

Let me know if Windows Update runs to completion after those four additional "speed up" patches are installed. Note that you should leave automatic Windows Updates permanently disabled [Windows Update | Change settings | Important updates | Never check for updates (not recommended) and then re-boot] throughout this process.

I'll try it later. F.Y.I. I ran Auslogic Defrag & Optimize Friday. After 5-1/2 hrs, it finished.

Checked all the boxes plus the Restore Points. Cleaned up 319 Megs. Rebooted. Getting worse.
From IE9... Could not get to File Hippo. Diagnostic box came up. Ran it. Said to contact my Service Provider.
From Opera... Could not get to the Website. Continuous wait loop.
From Firefox...Got there but very long time to load the page. Had to wait for all the Ads to load. Tried downloading 32 bit Icedragon. Went through the motions, but nothing downloaded.

Haven't touched MS Office yet.
