Vista freezing up during update

Hi, i have a compaq C700 laptop running vista home premium 32bit. While trying to install KB938371, my computer freezes when the bar is about 2/3 done in windows update. I am forced to turn my computer off, and do a system restore to get my laptop working normally again. Any suggestions what is going on, and what I can do to install this update successfully as it looks necessary for getting SP1 later. Thanks in advance. :D

The first time i tried to install the update, the last thing under system in event viewer is a warning, only error is when i rebooted my system and it said windows wasnt properly shut down:

Windows Servicing required reboot to complete the process of changing update 943302-16_RTM_neutral_PACKAGE from package KB943302(Update) into Resolving(Resolving) state

Then the next time i tried, there were a bunch of warnings, follow by a bunch of informations all saying the following things:

Windows Servicing is setting package KB938371_38(Update) state to Staging(Staging)

Windows Servicing required reboot to complete the process of changing update 938371-363_RTM_neutral_PACKAGE from package KB938371(Update) into Resolving(Resolving) state

Thanks, let me know if i can give any more info to help.

I looked at that link, it seems it is just description of this update and a link to the knowledge base article. Am i missing something?

It seems this update is required before i will be able to install SP1 so it seems critical that i figure out what is wrong so i can get it installed. Is it possible it might help to manually download the update from microsoft's website and install it like that without windows update?

thanks :(

Don't know if this will help, but i found that at the time windows update was downloading this update (not installing), it gave this error and many similar errors (the number before it says RTM is different in each of the errors:

Windows Servicing failed to complete the process of changing update 938371-303_RTM_neutral_LDR from package KB938371_37(Update) into Staging(Staging) state

My Computer

go into windows update.
Check your update history.
If KB938371_37 is installed then uninstall it.
Then try to update manually.
Also try to download from the normal microsoft site (Not the update).
