Hi Joan,

If you are still having trouble getting your Alternate Media - there are people who have posted that they borrowed a friend's install disc and used that ( with their own product key, of course ) see this link

Thanks for the suggestion the only problem with that is that I live in a small seaside village with none of my friends who live near by having such a thing or even knowing what it was
My daughter does have Vista but that's on a laptop and I'm not even sure whether she got a disc or just a recovery one with her machine, and she lives in the next village.

I'll get something sorted, I've already been able to make the Vista Recovery Disc that is in the Tutorials, but I'm one that likes to have everything on disc to hand in case of disaster, even if I never need it

Which is what I thought with regards this but others in the thread have said I would be able too, that was the reason I thought to pursue it.

I sent off an email yesterday to the support team for my location, stating the problem and I'm awaiting their reply, I did receive the automated reply back so I know the email is in the system to be dealt with when they're back at work.

If it does turn out that I cannot get one it wont be a complete disaster, I have the recovery disc I made from the Tutorial here I have all my programs on disc and all my settings so going back to the beginning would be possible if needs be.

It's just that when I saw that there was a chance to actually get the media for my system from Microsoft I thought I would try it and see if I could, I'm not saying I never but, I very rarely have problems with any of my machines and have never had to do a re-install of any of them, well apart from the first time I ever actually used a computer in 1998 which was a Windows 98 machine and the only reason I had to re-install that one twice was the firm I got the machine from sent it with the wrong disc's so causing problems.

It was certainly a good introduction to using a computer :D

Sorry if I misunderstood, I tried to order a 64 bit disk, entered my product number, ( the key on the side of my system mine is OEM..came installed on this custom order HP unit..) and it gave me the exact messege as Joan. No offer found.

Well, I guess Microsoft has changed it to where you must order from the OEM now. I definitely had a 32 bit OEM (eMachines) Vista Home Premium installation DVD version when I ordered the 64 bit version of it from that link.

Suppose there will be a lot of people using vLite to make bootable discs from a borrowed dvd, or the WAU files, if they have them on a recovery partition.

Yes, that will probably be true. It's to bad that OEM Vista recovery installation DVDs only offer a clean reinstall and not also have the System Recovery Options like a retail DVD to do repairs only with.

The WAU files stands for the Windows Anytime Update installation files.

Right :D thanks Shawn, I know if I bring up my Welcome Screen there is a button for Windows Anytime Upgrade but I've not clicked it to find out what it does.

Still waiting to hear back from Support and haven't had time yet to phone my OEM but wondering as now I have the Recovery disc which I made from your tutorial would it be that much of a disaster if I don't get a DVD, I now have the means to repair and the partition on my drive with the means of starting again.

The conversation I had with the OEM before I bought the machine was about not having the disc's with the system and at the time he said they didn't send out DVDs willy nilly because of the agreement with Microsoft, they had supplied the means to re-install the system and if it turned out to be a fault with the drive so that was lost I'm sure he told me that they would then supply the disc's to install on a replacement drive.

Hi Joan,

No, you're not being a pain. A lot of people are going to run into this problem, especially now the Alternate Media download is only working for some types of installations. So the more ways we can find of dealing with this now, the better.

I'd be surprised if Zoostorm wouldn't send you one for a nominal fee.

I tend to experiment quite a bit , so I need a disc to reinstall every now and again. It's also useful to do a reinstall after a year or two to clear out all the junk that inevitably accumulates on the hd - the machine then runs like new.

Yes.. I too like to do a clean install once in awhile in the past.. but seems I too will have to find a way to get the Vista disk....fun...

Joan,

You are not be a pain or problem at all. As SIW2 posted above, there will be a lot of people that will run into this issue. Besides, this forum is for posting and answering any questions about Vista.

I personally like having a installation DVD on hand just in case something happens to the hard drive or recovery partition and can only reinstall by a DVD.

You might also ask Zoostorm if they have a way for you to create your own Vista Recovery installation DVD from the partition. It may be easier and cheaper than ordering one from them.

I would not order a Windows Anytime Upgrade DVD though. To me, it's just to restrictive on what you can do with it. I prefer the freedom of a retail version.

Can you confirm that, as long as you use your own valid product key, you can use any copy of the dvd e.g. one you have borrowed from a friend ?

That should indeed be the case.... just remember to return the DVD in case
they need it to reinstall.

You you should be able to use any retail or express Vista installation DVD with your product key number.

I use by 64 bit Home Premium DVD I ordered from Microsoft to install my full version Ultimate version with that I just have a legal product key number for.
