Vista Idle Problem

I may not be on much longer, today. Do this until our next visit.

Try the memory diag again over night, see what happens.

Then use your computer; the next 3 times that you have the problem, write down the time. Then type event viewer in search and make note of all the errors that ocurred at that time.

Then go to device manager look for any warnings about bad drivers etc.
Type device manager in search.

Ok, so I ran the extended memory diag, that test also found nothing. I'm not too familiar with how to work the event monitor, though. I like this concept of removing 1 stick of ram and running the pc. How do I go about doing that?

Huzzah! It's been a good few hours of idling now, and it seems to be working. I simply pulled out 2 gigs of ram. I'll be sure to put it in again and see if the problem persists.

Glad it seems to be working.

If all goes well, remove the stick of ram that is in there, and try the other stick in the same slot.

If you get a lockup, then it is that stick of ram gone bad.
If it runs OK, then put the other stick back in, two sticks of ram in the machine.
If you then get a lockup, it may be the ram slot gone bad on the MB.

Something very odd has happened. I'd remove one stick of RAM and then run the PC for the whole day. I've tested two (out of 4) sticks in two different slots and yet this idle problem that I have been having just hasn't returned. This leads me to believe it isn't the RAM after all.

However, earlier today, I ran the PC with all 4 sticks of RAM in the PC and I got a blue screen. When vista rebooted it said I had a RAID driver missing. Do you think this may be related to my problem?

Whatever the case it seems as if the problem is long gone now, thanks for all your help richc and stoneys.
