Yes I have the product key stuck to the bottom of my computer, I just stupidly formatted the recovery partition, forgetting I didn't have a Vista Disc.

hi all, would it be possible to get a link to where i can get a windows iso to re-install vista on my laptop. i have the sticker at the bottom of the laptop, i was also wondering if this meant that i can only use the license code for home basic or can i use it for home premium or ultimate?

The product key on the sticker is only good for the same edition you already have installed - I assume that is Home Basic.

The only Vista ISO files still hosted are for Ultimate versions, so you'll have to modify the ISO to allow Home Premium to be installed. It isn't anything dangerous An ISO image contains all of the files required for any installation, be it Home Premium, Professional or Ultimate, but each disc contains a file, ei.cfg, which states which version is to be installed. If you remove this file, then you get to choose which version to install when you install Windows. Please bear in mind that your product key is version specific, so installing Ultimate won't work for you.

Download and run this, then browse to the ISO and it will remove the file for you

All Vista disks will install all editions without any mods, as far as I know?? (certainly the case for RTM - can't claim direct knowledge of later ones)
It's Win7 where you have to tweak the ISO to install different editions.

Thanks Noel It's been such a long time since I last installed Vista, I just assumed it would be the same as Windows 7.

i have a question here, i have an acer aspire (piece of crap) 5515 notebook. it came with vista home basic, i purchased an upgrade DVD of home premium, well thanks to acer i couldnt upgrade. files were missing for the upgrade. i look to buy a full version of vista but by that time they were taken off the shelf, so i opted for win7 and did a clean install. im wanting to sell my notebook but keep my win7, can i download the ISO burn it to a DVD and then reboot to vista. i have product key from the upgrade dvd's.

1. You have an upgrade license for Vist Home Prem - of course you can use it on that 5515 machine. You will need the install media - links in previous post.

2. You also bought a retail copy of win7 - you should be able to use that on another machine instead.

if download it as save, can i burn the save file as a bootable DVD and use the product key from the upgrade vista DVD.
my win7 is a OEM SBP (system builder pack)

You can download the Vista files and make an iso - it is quite easy.

You can use that iso with your Vista product key on the 1555.

However, if you bought oem system builder win7 - that is supposed to be tied to the machine you installed it on and can't be moved to another machine - that is why it is cheaper than the full retail version.

If you haven't used win7 product key - no problem.

If you already installed win7 - then quickly changed your mind - usually a call to MS ( toll free number ) is worth trying. They are good about that sort of thing.

They will need to know it will only be used on one machine.

i have used the win7, thats what my OS is right now. bought this in feb 09 and had it repaired 3 times during warranty period. acers idea for fixing corrupt files is doing factory default restore.. once a month restore it back to the way it came out of box. when warranty was up, i went searching for a full version of vista but by that time win7 was out and everybody done removed vista off shelf. searched online and got out of stock. talked with salesman at compusa and he said theres no need to buy both version when your going to install only one of the two. he showed me the OEM SBP DVD's and ask what version i had, for 99 bucks thought was a great deal and purchased it. didnt have any of acers crap causing problems any more. 3 of their programs caused problems and they know they had problem with and said they could fix it for 200 bucks, thats including installing my upgrade DVD. thats why i went with the OEM SBP win7 home premium DVD.

When you have your computer just the way you want, make an image with the free Macrium Reflect (you can download it for free). Then if you ever have a problem again just reinstall with the free Macrium. It will take 15 minutes and alll your stuff and software will just like the way it was when you made the image. If a month after the first image you are still satisfied with your performance, just make an updated image.

this is the real kick from acer, if you purchased the aspire 5515 before may 09, you could pay them to upgrade your notebook to win7, if you purchased in may 09 or after, they offered a free upgrade to win7. now the kicker is! theres no support drivers for win7 on their support website. what acer done was, if you got the upgrade to win7 they gave you back an Emachine E620. Emachine/Gateway support offers drivers for win7.

Most vista drivers will work with 7 and in fact for me the only ones that didn't work where for my sound card. You can use device manager to find out what you have and download them from the manufacturer's site. Chances are you either have realtek or creative and both should have drivers for 7. I think that an advantage to a retail disk is that you don't get the "fluff" that the manufacturer puts on the system although most of what they put on can probably be removed.

It's interesting that you bring up acer. My dad had a acer laptop that he had some problems with. There wasn't any corruption however it got annoying enough that be blamed it on vista and bought a mac. He didn't even try 7.

i used realtech 2.72 driver for sound card. AMD said i couldnt do it but i did, i used their vista driver for graphics chipset, that they said acer modified and i had to use only acers driver, that hasnt been update since oct 2009. for webcam i used the emachines e620 win7 driver. windows update installed the realtech PCIe family controller. also in updates i opted out of installing the microsoft compatability driver for the ATI X1200 graphic chipset, so i could install the AMD vista driver.

I have put a copy of my Retail Vista disc on dropbox
It has all versions but you can only use the version that you have a key for.
It does not have any service packs on

Here is an ISO that has been used by others to solve ISO problems.
Apparently, your email has been removed for security purposes. You should not post the address in public forums
