Ok, so the PoolMaxUsage registry patch now stops the machine from blowing up completely. It quickly eats up to 70% of all physical ram and then hovers around there. I can run stuff without running out of memory and at least I can go a few days without a reboot.
Not sure I understand it, but it's better than rebooting every hour, or less.
I got PoolMon running (just took it from the XP distro), but aside from 1.6GB of Paged allocated under the tag "MmSt", I still can't account for where the memory is going.
The problem with reinstalling, is that there is no guarantee that the issue will not crop up again, but I'm running out of ideas ...
