Solved Vista not recognising native resolution

This is starting to get rather frustrating. Windows has randomly tricked itself into thinking something untrue. When I installed Windows, it left me with the basic service pack 1 (or whatever the default is) and I had to update a few times. Could that have possibly affected this kind of setting? Surely I can open some sort of registry and edit it so Windows thinks the default resolution is whatever I set it as?

As you have no idea really what updates went in, its possible.

Are you setting your custom res in Nvidisa control panel?

Initially I was using the Nvidia control panel but I've since changed the Windows setting that hides 'incompatible' resolutions. Using this, I've been able to use my 1680x1050 resolution.

I tried the Metro 2033 demo the other day though and it seemed to want to automatically use the "default" resolution of 1600x1200, which meant I was stuck in the game with my screen saying "Out of range". Alt tabbing wouldn't work and Ctrl, Alt, Delete didn't work either so I had to hard boot the PC. Even after that it still wanted to keep the 1600x1200 res so I had to use the BIOS thingy to boot up at 640x480 and then change to 1680x1050. Long story with little significance, I know, but it's pretty frustrating. Is there a way to uninstall service packs so I can see whether that'd change anything?

Yup, you can uninstall them through the add/remove part.

Click view installed updates.

I have had a quick look at this monitor. It appears some people have had to install the drivers manually.
This screen uses a standard refresh rate and modes.
Have you tried reseting the monitor to the factory defaults?

Try clicking on control panel, device manager, monitor update driver software then update with the monitor.sys file that came with your monitor CD.

I got this monitor about 3 or 4 years ago, so even if I did get a CD with it, it's now long gone. I'll see if I can find the files through Google though.
