Vista Pink Screen

Odd problem. When Thinkpad z61m widescreen laptop running vista business reboots, login screen appears as normal. User login is fine and circular process hums along as if all is well. When desktop would normally appear screen turns pink. HDD appears to be running fine. you can hit Fn f5 and wireless mgt interface appears on top of the pink screen. Ctl Alt Dlt will not bring up mgt console. I can reboot to safe mode options and it ends up after login with a black screen with safe mode in all four corners. Mouse cursor is visible and moves whether on pink screen or black screen safe mode. I attached an external monitor since the function keys work but external shows the pink screen also which would lead you to the video card or video drivers.

Thinkpad ships with thinkvantage rescue recovery option you can activate before Vista loads. I can access browser inside rescue recovery and monitor works fine. I am typing from the laptop right now using Opera browser supplied with rescue recovery but not sure if I can apply driver updates, etc. without actually working from within Vista???

My daughter was trying to logon to a relatives wireless network when this happened and she had just done a manual IP release from inside the wireless mgt interface to try to logon to their router.
She did a hard reboot using the power on button and this has happened ever since. Any ideas? My gut is this can be resolved but would like advice. The laptop shipped with a windows anytime upgrade Vista dvd but doubt this would provide any support.

Try a clean boot to help diagnose 3
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

Go to device manager and make sure that all drivers are functioning properly (no yellow warning markers. Then make sure graphics driver is up to date.

If that does not work follow these steps
Run a full antivirus scan 1
Download and run a full scan with malwarebytes.

We have another option of use the last known good configuration, but I hold off on that until the other steps are tried.

Follow these in order, do not try to improvise. We will get this corrected.


That upgrade DVD can be used as a last resort, but dont think that will be necessary.

Would I have to log into Vista in order to perform the clean boot process? JV

Normally clean boot (which is a great diagnostic tool) is normally done after login

Perform any of the other solutions that you can and report back.

I have attempted to give you the easy way out. If all fails, for whatever reason, there are other methods. I have suggested a few already
Do what you can and then report back.

No luck on any options. I have been able to boot from my install DVD and can get to a c: prompt but recovery did not identify any issue. Searching other blogs I have seen references to problems like this where UAC has to be disabled using MMC but I don't think I can get to MMC without finding a way to login. Another comment said to create a new user profile but not sure this can be done without logging in. Any other ideas??? Appreciate your help...

Your best bet would be the system resore in safe mode. Can you do that?

If you cant go with that, the last known good configuation would do it.

Vista Scannow question

Trying to run SFC from the command prompt. Can only get to command prompt by going into Thinkvantage Does anyone know what to do if sfc /scannow results in an error saying "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation"?
If I get to a command prompt by using the System Recovery Options by booting from Vista DVD, does this provide elevated privileges?

I don't want to lose my applications but not having any luck getting windows desktop to come up after I login from Windows. All I get is a pink screen and if I go in via safe mode I get a blank black screen with safe mode on all four corners but no windows interface. Any ideas? Help!

The first thing you do is run 3 more times. SFC cannot always fix everything at the first try.
Normally, the next step is to do a repair install; but we have the good fortune to have a member who has the talent and ability to analyze and most problems by reading the cbs log

Hello!

This is quite a bad situation. This error usually means some sort of corruption or error that SFC cannot fix. To fix this, I would need to analyse your whole CBS.log.

But my question to you is this: From my understanding of the issue, your computer cannot boot. Have you tried from Safe Mode: Task Manager (Ctrl-Shift-Esc) > File > New Task (Run...) > explorer.exe.

Is it worth it? If we try to fix SFC, the fix may be hard. The computer still won't work, and there will be a massive amount of clearing up to do afterwards. Is it really worth it. I don't mind looking at the log, because that it quick and simple. Can you access C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log in any way?

It seems you can't even run SFC, so we need to get past that before running it three times (assuming it finds errors).

Yes, it can be run from the command prompt from the Recovery section of the DVD.

If using the disk, cd to C:\Windows\System32. Type sfc /scannow and enter and let it run. It will scan and try to fix some of your system files. Hopefully it will complete with no corruption it could not repair (if there is such corruption post back here or try to analyze it to find the problem file(s) using http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228. Try to attach the report (you may need to copy it to a flash drive to transfer to a working computer before it will permit you to attach it) here so we can see if they can be repaired with good copies from the installation disk or other system files (unless there are too many).

Whether or not that works, while in Command Prompt, type chkdsk /f /r and enter and let it run. It will want to schedule itself to run at the next restart. Answer yes and then reboot to run the program. It will scan and try to fix any corruption or bad sectors on your hard drive and mostly remove that as a potential cause.

Also, with the Recovery section of the Vista Disk, I would try the following:

Do you know when this problem began? Try a System Restore to a point in time BEFORE the problem began. Here's the procedure: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html. Be sure to check the box to show more than 5 days of restore points. If the first attempt fails, then try an earlier point or two. NOTE: You will have to re-install any software and updates you installed between now and the restore point, but you can use Windows Update for the updates. The recovery disk works a bit different from the above procedures but if you follow the prompts from the System Restore menu option with the above information you should be able to restore with no problems.

If the System Restore doesn't work, do a Startup Repair by booting to the genuine Windows Vista Installation Disk (or one you can borrow from ANYONE) or from a Recovery Disk with recovery options included on it. Here's the procedure: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/91467-startup-repair.html.

My point is that the error is "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation". If that's the case, SFC did not run so no logs were created so there's nothing to get yet until we can get SFC to run. If the error were that it found corrupt files, I'd completely agree - but with this error, we have a different problem. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I do not believe logs will exist (unless they are from prior runs before this particular problem) if SFC did not perform the requested operation.

This error means that SFC failed to run. It usually happens part way through a scan, although it can happen at the beginning. Up until that point, logs are created, but this has only scanned a percentage of the file system. At the error a CBS/CSI error will be logged in CBS.log giving exact details of why it failed. This would not be carried into a parsing of the log, hence the reason why the whole log is required, and not just the normal parsing.

Thank you very much for the clarification. I was not aware any logs were created if that error message was generated. I now see I was incorrect and in fact, those logs actually contain the cause of the SFC failure. I now know what to do when I see that error message again, so I have learned much already today and appreciate you sharing your knowledge.

Should any of the other procedures from the disk be attempted (including any further attempts to run SFC or perhaps excluding only that part) or should we simply await the copy of the log before trying anything else?

Appreciate the more detailed options. SFC is bombing quickly within about 15 seconds. I did run check disk but without the flags in the post so I will run again in a moment. I mentioned the only way I can get to the command prompt is by running a startup utility from Lenovo called Thinkvantage. One option is the command prompt and I can start a copy of Opera to access internet. This is how I ran chkdsk and it confirmed plenty of hard disk space. Any reason why I would not be able to run the Malware scan from Opera. I will try again and let you know the error message I am receiving.

Believe I have tried all the solutions listed in the posts to no avail. Have a copy of the CBS log file to forward from flash drive if anyone can help with how/where to forward. Have created a zip file and can attach or send based on your standard practice.

Chkdsk runs with no errors but problem persists. No previous restore points and last known goo boot doesn't yield any results. Would like to do clean boot but can't get into desktop or safe mode. Have the Vista DVD and product code so considering the full install option assuming it will even work. I can get to C: prompt by booting from the DVD but none of the repair / recovery options yield any results.

Appreciate any help the experts can offer! As a sidenote, this forum has offered the best advice of any I have seen.
