I'd suggest you make sure you have a convenient way to back it off, such as a backup image. You may not have a problem but "if it ain't broke don't fix it" has haunted me many times when I ignored that advice. :)

There is no one who will aruge with that advice; but I hope that the poster does try to install, security and other enhancements make it worthwhile. As suggested, a system image and also system restore points would be prudent.

If you have a back up, definately try SP2. It contains, security and product enhancements.

Okay thats what scares me Microsoft Security patches,as i don't do Auto Updates.
My experience is that the security updates fix one thing>>>then causes another problem. my opinion auto updates is a nightmare
Since i started doing that a few years ago,my PC works fine>>plus i use Kaspersky Internet Security 2010.
I stay right away from Windows defender.

Yes, I too have found that the automatic updates always seems to install some update that inhibits my OS from functioning properly.

Kaspersky Internet Security is a good anti-virus program; I would still consider using Windows Defender though... Correct me if I am wrong guys, but isn't Windows Defender a anti-spyware/malware program, and does not provide protection against viruses?

I wouldn't just rely on a restore point. I'd back up the entire system partition to an external drive. If the SP install hoses your system, then there's a chance restore won't work. You need a bootable CD that can restore the image from an external USB drive. You can get the software free. The drive will come in handy anyway. I use docking stations. I get double duty as backup and also to put videos on for my set top box. You should see some bargains on USB 2.0 docking stations since USB 3.0 has come out.

edit: there are several free image backup programs. I use Macrium Reflect but the "best" one is the one where the restore CD can see your HD. You should boot the restore CD and just go into the restore program to verify it can see your drive. It's a very unpleasant surprise if it can't.
