I have a 2nd hand computer that has vista ultimate evaluation copy. After playing around with this for a week or so, I have decided that I'd like to somehow reinstall XP. Tried this without success. What can I do?

If you mean that you want to completely get rid of vista and have xp installed.
You would need to perform and clean install of XP.
To do this, boot from the xp cd, the most complete method, would be to delete the current partition on the disk. Then create a new one, and format.
Then carry on with the xp installation.
