Avast does have a separate 32 bit and 64 bit version, but the 64 bit version still has some 32 bit files in it.

I never used ESET, but I find Avast to be a great program for Vista and have never had one virus using it.

LOL, Norton is hot alright. So hot it melts your computer.

I'll take a guess you've never tried Norton 360, otherwise you wouldn't say that.

Having tried various systems, I find Norton 360 the least intrusive, it works quickly and quietly in the background, the only time you know its there is when Live updates are available, and when your due a backup.

since norton 2008 products were released...they have really minimized the system impact (man it was a nightmare)....but now pretty much feather-weight as regards processes running in the background, etc. and its definitely the best for anyone using p2p, etc

Norton Antivirus (claims x64 on XP x64), but vista x64 is *32 (and it doesn't have the right-click "scan file/folder option which SUCKS!)...but works perfectly apart from that. I had a 30min support session about it and they said all was well on my system and "you are protected!"....lol....sounded like 2-bit whore comment!

Hi Silver and BleepingCrazy,

I must admit that I have not tried the latest versions of Norton. With all of the horror stories and reports I have received and seen on Norton, it just scared me away from using them at all. I truly hope that they worked out all of the bugs in their latest versions. Back some time ago Norton was a great program to have. Hopefully it will be again. For now I will still just wait and see.

Things improved from 2007 versions, before that only the A/V part of Norton was any good, the suites were terrible.

you're totally right silver....same here....and i was amazed at the 2008 version. no faults at all on xp since the norton 2008 release. just hope it turns 64-bit sometime soon!

Hmm...so Norton has improved? Cause from what I remembered, it had a very heavy foot print on any system I had tested it on.

But I haven't tried Norton 360....I'll wait until the x64 version is available.

It works just as well on 64 bit, I know I've used it.

Running NOD32 64bit.

All i have to say is wonderful !

I like it very, very much.

Kaspersky i used to run, but, i find NOD32 much more faster and reliable.

I had tp get it off a PC just today. It freaked out on the ladies 2 year old e-machine and loaded 186 proceses. The machine had a Celeron to add insult to injury. Removing Norton reduced here to 33 running proceses and returned her to the wonderful world of emailing her family.

Symantec needs to close up and disappear. They lost my trust forever about 4 years ago.

What year was the Norton,?

Norton doesn't load processes, thats the OS.

4 years ago, and you've not bothered to check for improvements since then, rather lackadaisical, I like to keep up-to-date, applications move on, like OS's, you have to keep up with new applications, especially if they are a vast improvement on what used to be, living in the past is not really sensible in the world of computing.

Past prejudices rarely are a help in problem solving, it closes the mind to other possibilities.

I'm not looking to start a debate about which AV is the best or worse. But in the last 5 years symantec has caused more harm then its prevented. Its common practice to eradicate it in favor of either NOD32, Avast or Avira when its found infecting any system that crosses our bench. I know they have contracts with the military and all that but people fail to realise that when you buy a symantec product your not getting the same product the military gets. you get the one the fries your system. Past prejudices are not an issue. Everytime I come accros symantec its causeing problems and missing threats.
