I recently sold my Vista Ultimate retail package to someone.

I explained it had been previously installed & activated.

He then emails me telling me he cannot activate it and says the keycode was not de-activated by me. I have formatted the drive vista was on & now use windows 7 64bit.

He either wants me to de-activate it, Which I've never heard of or a refund.

What can I do? I explained that theres NO refunds accepted.

I thought all you had to do was format the drive it was on and the other person calls m$ and tells them.

He says this:

"I get directed to windows web site and told I have to purchase a windows 7 key code for $140.00 which defeats the purpose for me purchasing the vista from you because my computer is not compatable to upgrade to window 7"

Somehow I think he copied the disk(s), And used the key & wants his $ back, Which I wont do.

I understand you cannot sell OEM versions like this, But this was a full retail box set you get at bestbuy/walmart etc.

Hallo Fantomau, If what you sold him is an UPGRADE it is a simple case of activating by phone;

I have copied the relevant Note: from this tutorial as to what is legal in regard to the resale:

A Express or Retail Vista can be installed on any one computer at a time for as many times as you like. A OEM Vista may only be able to be installed on the exact same computer as many times as you like. The product key number for the Vista 32 bit version is the same one for it's 64 bit version. You can only have the Product Key activated on one computer and version of 32 bit or 64 bit Vista at a time. See: Microsoft: License Terms for Software Licensed from Microsoft

Hello Fantomau, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You can tell him that this is perfectly normal. When you activate Vista using a product key number that has been previously activated on another computer, then you will usually have to do a phone activation (click on link) instead of being able to normally activate it online.

He will just need to tell the Microsoft activation operator that he had got this copy from you, and that you had uninstalled it from your computer since you purchased Windows 7. The operator should then be able to activate that key number for his one computer.

Its not an upgrade, Its a full retail box with 32/64bit disks.
