Solved Vista Update KB978207 Error 80071A91

I am trying install Windows Vista Update:

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (KB978207)

and everytime I try, I get error code 80071A91

The help link was no help and the free Microsoft Technical Support via email was no luck with their only resolution was to reinstall Vista.

When I look in the Event Viewer, I see this error

Windows Servicing failed to complete the process of setting package Package_for_KB978207_ie8~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~8.0.1.1 () into Staged(Staged) state


I actually have several Updates that will not install, but this one was the first going all the way back to 2/10/2010 which was the first attempt so I am hoping if I can resolve this error, the others will work fine.

I have tried several forums and attempt to find info on the microsoft site but I have found nothing that I have tried that has worked.

Can anyone give me any assistance?

Hi,

Try this:

How-to reset the File System Resource Manager if you receive error 0x80071A91

1. Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator.
2. In the Command Prompt window you will need to type the following, and press ENTER:
fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\
3. Note: You will need to replace the C:\ with the drive letter that Windows Vista is installed on.
4. Restart your computer, and then attempt to install the failed update(s).



And this: Error message when you try to install a Windows update, a hotfix, or a service pack after you perform System Restore in Windows Vista: "0x80071A91"

Was the fix!!!

I have been struggling with this issue for 6 weeks!

You rock!

I have no idea exactly what that fix does in general but I also noticed the following after applying that fix:

1) Startup, especially of my gadgets FLY! again
2) Restarts are instant again!

My brother who has been helping me noticed instantly that the system was quicker again after applying the fix and the disk had less thrash. Obviously some inconsistency.

I am keeping that link for future issues!
